  1. Lesson 12a University of Bergamo Engineering and Management for Health FOR CHRONIC DISEASES MEDICAL SUPPORT SYSTEMS LESSON 12A Exam and Project Ettore Lanzarone April 15, 2020 Evaluation 1. written exam dealing with all theoretical background and examples discussed in the course, followed by oral exam to discuss the written exam and including other questions 2. presentation of the group project Presentation of the project consists of providing the report and preparing a presentation of 15 minutes. This presentation will be made by the students of the group together. It can be done both before or after the other part. The mark will be registered after both parts are completed. The mark is a weighted average (weight 75% for exam; 25% for project)

  2. Lesson 12a Written exam Examples of questions • Define the likelihood function and present the maximum likelihood estimation method (both in general and discussing a medical example) • Discuss an approach to validate a proposed model given an observation dataset, with particular reference to one of cross-validaton techniques. Highlight some of the metrics that can be adopted to evaluate the performance of a model. • Present the simple Euler method to discretize a differential equation y’=f(x,y) and discuss how to choose the discretization step. • Present the structure of the electrical circuit used to model the fluid-dynamic behavior of the blood in a vessel segment. • Present the general structure of a metaheuristic approach. • … • …. Written exam Duration of the exam 1.5 hours. The written exam is followed by an oral exam to discuss the answers.

  3. Lesson 12a Project Report of max 20 pages. Slides for a presentation of about 15 minutes. Groups of max 3 students. Projects will be discussed during one of the oral exams. Students are free to choose when to present the project. The mark is registered when both parts are completed (but they must be both completed within the academic year, i.e., before the course restarts next year); otherwhise the student must restart with both parts. Project Topic chosen among those presented during the course or on a dataset suggested by the student themselves and approved. Deadlines: • Group definitions – April 15. Each group choose a component as leader for the administrative stuff. The leader will send a mail with the list of the names before the deadline. • Topics – May 10 The leader will send a mail with the chosen topic. If the topic is chosen by the group, it has to be presented in advance for approval. • Report and slides – 7 days before the discussion date The leader will send a mail with the attachments.

  4. Lesson 12a Project Suggested topics • Analysis of the impact of aortic prostheses on the systemic pressure by means of lumped parameter models of the circulation. • Evaluation of the evolution of patient-specific parameters between consecutive hemodialysis treatments. • Comparison of different techniques to reduce noise within a slice and between contiguous slices in DW-MRI. • Solutions to correlate the segments in the estimation of the aortic compliance based on non- invasive data. • Tailoring the ECMO on the specific patient. Approaches to quantify the uncertainty in FEM problems applied to biomechanics. • • Dimensioning the articial pancrease on the specific patient The first topics are already detailed; as for those addressed in the next lessons further details will be provided
