Who are Young Scot? • National youth information and citizenship charity for Scotland • Established for over 25 years and based in Edinburgh • Supporting young people aged 11 – 26 • Provide information using a range of information and opportunity websites • National Entitlement Card – holders can use it to obtain discounts in Scotland and Europe

  3. What is the Youth in Action programme? A collection of ‘Actions’ (projects) that aim to: • promote young people’s active citizenship in general and their European citizenship in particular • contribute to the developing the quality of support systems for youth activities and the capabilities of civil society organisations in the youth field • promote European cooperation in the youth field • Between 2007 – 2013 € 885 million available

Actions • 1.1 Youth Exchanges • 1.2 Youth Initaitives • 1.3 Youth Democracy Projects • 2 European Voluntary Service • 3.1 Cooperation with the Neighbouring Partnership Countries of the European Union • 4.3 Training and Networking of those active in youth work and youth organisations • 5.1 Meetings of young people and those responsible for youth policy

Youth Exchanges • A project which brings together groups of young people from two or more countries. • An opportunity for these young people to discuss and confront various themes whilst learning about each others’ countries and cultures. • There are 3 phases to the activity – planning and preparation, implementation of activity and evaluation.

Youth Exchanges Youth Exchanges are not: • academic study trips • exchange activities which aim to make monetary profit • exchange activities that are essentially tourism • festivals • holiday travel • language courses • performance tours • school class exchanges • sports competitions • statutory meetings of organisations • political gatherings • work camps

  8. European Voluntary Service • Administered by the British Council • Partnership between:  Host Organisation (Project)  Volunteer (Individual)  Sending Organisation (Support) • Travel, accommodation, health insurance, language lessons & living allowance all provided - no charge to volunteer

  9. European Voluntary Service • Short term placements  Ages 16-18  Placements from 2 weeks to 2 months  For young people who have fewer opportunities • Long term placements  Ages 18-30  Placements from 2 to 12 months

  13. Finances • What’s available? • For hosting a Volunteer € 630 unreceipted costs for organisation + € 150 volunteer allowance • Overall budget divided between Host and Sending Organisation

Becoming a Sending Organisation - Benefits • Support local young people to access an exciting opportunity • Promote your organisation to more young people • Add or enhance a European dimension to your work • Skilled, confident young people return to your community • Networking, training and learning opportunities for your organisation

  15. Becoming a Sending Organisation - Logistics • Role is to support young people before, during and after their EVS placement • Arrange their pre-departure training • Organisations must be accredited • Process takes 3 months

  16. Accreditation • Complete and Expression of Interest Form • Must be done at least 6 weeks prior to the submissions window • Visit or phone interview with a representative from the National Agency

Becoming a Host Project - Benefits • Add or enhance a European dimension of your work • Benefit from the contributions of a volunteer who’s committed and passionate with a fresh/international perspective • Showcase your organisation throughout Europe • Network with similar European organisations • Contribute to the Scottish Government’s National Outcomes

Becoming A Host Project - Logistics • Organisation must be non-profit • Volunteer must have clearly defined role with a variety of tasks and (non-formal) learning opportunities • Full-time volunteering 35 hours per week between 2-12 months • Can’t replace paid positions • Current UK priority is for 6-12 month placements

Erasmus+ • New WU programme for education, training, youth and sport. • Begins January 1 st 2014. • Simplified and Streamlined. • Overall budget 70% higher. • Some activities funded under Lifelong Learning Partnership will disappear while others will be incorporated into the new system. Erasmus+ will fund 3 Key Actions: 1. Learning Mobility of Individuals 2. Co-operation for Innovation and Good Practices 3. Support for Policy Reform
