New Words • Pulse – a steady count (can usually group into 4 beats) • Tempo – the speed that we play those counts • Tone – the difference between high & low sounds • Dynamics – changing between loud & soft sounds • Vibration – the movement of air that creates sound • Pattern – arranging the sounds to repeat over & over • Melody – using alternating tones in a pattern • Call & Response – 2 groups taking turns playing patterns that fit together

Basic Exercises • Simply listening to music as a group and pointing out specific parts of the recording to follow and mimic (for example … clapping with the snare or humming with the horn part) • Everyone can do the “We Will Rock You” drum beat … practice that with body percussion (for example … LAP LAP CLAP, LAP LAP CLAP) • Using a 4 Count time- keeping pulse … have each child say their name to the pulse (for example … NOR -MAN can be said can be said on counts 1 & 2 of a 4 Count beat or HIL-A-RY would be on counts 1,2,3)

Advanced Exercises • Have the children get in the middle of the circle or in front of the class and conduct a rumble … getting quiet & loud then ending with a big stop • Ask the class to demonstrate simple drum beats … saying a pattern & then playing it • Using a 4 Count time- keeping pulse … have each child spell their name to the rhythm of the pulse (for example … N O R M A N can be spelled over the pulse)
