What are HFUTC doing to support my child? www.connect.collins.co.uk This is an online resource that has been bought by the School to support your child’s progress. They have their own login and are able to access the information on the go as well as in formal revision times. www.gcsepod.com GCSEpod is a new addition to the many revision tools available to the students. On this site, students can find a great number of podcasts which they can download to their phone, tablet or computer and watch/listen to them in their spare time ( such as riding on the bus or train!). www.samlearning.com If you have any problems using this resource, maybe a trip to see Mrs Perry will help!

What do the new grades mean? The first new exams for GCSE Maths and English were in summer 2017 . The new GCSE exams for Geography, History, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Combined Science, Modern Foreign Languages, Business Studies, Physical Education and Computer Science will start in summer 2018 . This year , nearly all GCSE’s sat will be under the 9-1 grading structure. There's no Foundation Level in the new English GCSEs — students of all abilities will take the same exams. The government’s definition of a ‘good pass’ will be set at grade 5 for reformed GCSEs.
Core Subject Exam support! How can you help..?!
English Tips! Please encourage your child to read their set texts over and over again! They need to know their texts and specific quotes. Students have the use of Collins Connect to access revision sources for English. They are also actively encouraged to access GCSEpod for support with Literature.
Revision Materials - English All students have been issued with booklets to help structure their revision (there are 6 in total) and these are being used in form time to support them. Students have also been issued with a CGP guide for English Language which contains some practice questions. They also have access to a range of marked responses which will help them ascertain where they can improve. The students have been emailed with booklets containing exam style questions for them to practise at home.

Intervention/Extra Support All students have all been invited to attend an extra session on a Wednesday P8 (which has been running since September) Students who are working below their target grade have also been invited to attend a more focused intervention session with their teacher to help them brush up on specific skills. The Year 11 Quote Off This week, the students will also receive a booklet containing a list of key quotations for each text. They will be challenged to learn these and then compete against each other to demonstrate how many they know. We have been practising these as starters in classes for some time now so this should be quite straightforward for them. Do encourage them to talk to you about the key quotations!
Recommended Extras…. Revision guides are available for all of the set texts (priced around £5 on Amazon) CGP ones are popular because they are easy to read! The Quotation Bank range are also really useful (again priced at around £5 on Amazon) and are available for each text.
Maths Tips! Reducing the REDs: www.vle.mathswatch.co.uk Each half term pupils are given a question level analysis, identifying areas of improvement and strengths These are ‘ragged’. NAME Pupils will revise each ‘red’ and ‘amber’ topic areas, by watching the clip on Mathswatch, answering the interactive questions and finally completing the worksheet. Ticking off a red/amber as they successfully complete each topic.

As well as all students have all been invited to attend an extra session on a Thursday P8 (which has been running since January). Most likely topics on both higher and foundation.
Science Tips! Each Year 11 student has been assigned a mentor in science which they meet with each week to recap some of the more difficult topics covered throughout the GCSE. Year 11 students are encouraged to make use of their Educake, giving them access to revision and exam practice. (www.educake.co.uk) Searching for GCSE Exam Practice Questions : Students will need to visit the AQA Qualification website: (www.aqa.org.uk)
Exam Papers: Step One: go to www.aqa.org.uk and click on past papers Step Two: choose the options from the drop down menus
Exam Papers (cont): Step Three: Select which specification you require from the drop down menu and it will show the available papers As these are new exams, past papers are not yet available but specimen papers are provided to help students prepare.
Exam Day Information! If your child is unwell on the day of an exam Students should make every effort to ensure that they attend all exams. If they miss any, it cannot be taken at any other time. If they are ill and unable to get to school on the day, you must do the following: Inform us BEFORE 09:00am on the day of the exam by calling 0121 794 2888. Get a medical note from your doctor and give the note to Miss Kubicek, the Examinations Officer, as soon as possible. If medical evidence cannot be provided, parents/carers will be asked to pay the fees for the missed exams. Routine medical, dental and other appointments should be re-arranged to avoid clashes with examination times.
