Pre-School Artist-in-School Scheme(AISS) • Overview of the focus area on selected art form: 1) T eachers lack basic dance skills and knowledge of cultural dances. 2) Children have little exposure to culturaldances. 3) Allow children to explore different waysof learning local culture • Theme for T erm 4: Our Traditions and Cultures- funand meaningful. • Especially appealing for kinesthetic learners. 4) Therefore, genre of dance chosen: ‘Traditional and Celebratory Dance’. Purpose ofAISS: 1) For teachers to deepen their knowledge and enhance skills in cultural dance through working with professional art practitioners. o build confidence and continue to develop teacher’s professional skills in delivering music and 2) T movement lesson integrating cultural dances in the dailycurriculum. 3) T o create authentic, purposeful yet fun learning opportunities for the children while meeting their developmental goals. 4) For children to simply appreciate and enjoy their local culture through cultural dances. Benefits of theprogramme: Children • Children can respond and represent their thoughts and feelings through dance, in ways of Bruner (1996) three models of representation in cognitive development of children: - Enactive (action) - Iconic(imaged) - Symbolic(language) • We recognise children as curious and active learners • Through dance, provided them with opportunities to understand themselves and giving them the ability to construct their own knowledge and encourage creative thinking.
