NIH - A two-component system INTRAMURAL • Conducting research in NIH laboratories. EXTRAMURAL • Supporting the research of non-Federal scientists in universities, medical schools, hospitals, and research institutions throughout the USA and around the world. Supporting the training of research investigators. Fostering communication of medical and health sciences information. 6
NIAID Mission NIAID conducts and supports a global program of research aimed at improving diagnosis, treatment and prevention of immunologic, allergic and infectious diseases. This research has led to new therapies, vaccines, diagnostic tests, and other technologies that have improved the health of millions of people in the United States and around the world.
