Year of Culture 2019 • Durham County Council, Visit County Durham and Partners • Celebration of all events small and large • From agricultural shows to Lumiere • Starting in January 2019 • Not just for visitors • We want to involve the community as much as possible • By the end of 2019, every resident would have had a chance to be a part of the Year of Culture
Aims • Durham Tourism Management Plan priorities • To generate economic benefits for the local economy • Revised target for the value of the visitor economy – £1 billion by 2020 • County’s cultural offer plays a critical role in realising ambitions • Festivals and events contribute to a higher national and international profile for Durham • Provide reasons to visit now • Extend length of stay • Address seasonality
Aims • Link culture more closely to the Durham brand as a differentiating factor • Encourage more people to discover and engage with Durham's culture and heritage • Cement the position of Durham as a premiere English cultural county • Increase the consumption of culture, arts and heritage tourism experiences by visitors and residence • Cultural legacy left for the county which can be enjoyed by residents and visitors, long after 2019
Cricket World Cup 2019 Trophy Tour • 7 th and 8 th April 2019 • Provisional venues include: Raby Castle, Durham Cathedral, Durham University (Rowing), Beamish Museum & Durham Cricket Club Tournament • Hosted by England and Wales, from 30 th May to 14 th July 2019 • 48 matches in total, 3 will be played in Durham ⁻ Friday, 28 June – South Africa vs Sri Lanka ⁻ Monday, 1 July – Sri Lanka vs Windies ⁻ Wednesday, 3 July – England vs New Zealand
