Academic Achievement Benefits for ELL’s and NES’s Both ELLs and NES (Native English Speakers) in bilingual immersion programs demonstrated large gains over time in their reading and math achievement test scores. By middle school, both groups scored at or well above grade level in reading and math when measured in both languages. Most students believed that learning through two languages trained them to think better and helped them do better in school (Lindholm-Leary, 2005).
