<draft-morelli-ipv6-ix-v6ops-00.txt> Authors: Mario Morelli Jordi Palet Martinez David Fernandez Antonio Gomez Skarmeta
Main Goal and Background • Goal of the draft: to describe the experience gained inside the Euro6IX research IST project – Indeed some text is needed to make clearer this goal • Background: Euro6IX is a Pan-European IPv6-only network implementing different functionalities and services, intended to be a pre-commercial trial for the European Telcos/ISPs. – We called the nodes of the network as “Internet Exchange” based on a layer 3 infrastructure

Description (1) Long Haul Providers … LHP1 LHPm IX … R R RC1 IXLC1 Value Added L3MF … … Services RCn IXLCn IX Customers R … R RP1 RPk … IXRC1 IXRCk Regional Providers
Description (2) • Three main players: – IX – IX customers (e.g. Enterprises/Regional Providers) – Long Haul Providers (Provider Connectivity) • Basic issues: – IX provides addresses to its customers – Connectivity provision and IPv6 address assignment can be considered as separated issues: • IX provides addresses to its customers • Long Haul Provider provide physical connectivity – If an IX customer wants to change its Provider Connectivity, it does not need to change its own addresses, as they have been assigned by the IX and not by LHP. It only will have to renumber if it changes the IX it is connected to. • An IX customer gets an address space independently on the Long Haul Provider it uses for the Long Haul Connectivity (useful for multihoming)
Next Steps • Continue documenting the Euro6IX operational experience • Feedback on the Mailing List from the WG to evaluate if this experience is interesting for the WG and if it useful to be continued
