April 2019 Designate Project Update Graham Hayes - mugsie / gr@ham.ie Erik Olof Gunnar Andersson - eandersson
What is Designate? To provide scalable, on demand, self service access to authoritative DNS services, in a technology-agnostic manner. Started in 2012 General Availability in HP Public Cloud in 2013 Added to OpenStack in Liberty 16% of production OpenStack installs use Designate
OpenStack Rocky ➡ OpenStack Project Wide Goals • Done ➡ Python 3 work ➡ Neutron + Designate projects are now cross gating on the integration feature ➡ Oslo Versioned Objects merged
OpenStack Stein ➡ OpenStack Project Wide Goals • Done ➡ Python 3.7 fixes ➡ Fixed DB Deadlocks ➡ NAPTR + CAA ➡ Gate Improvements ➡ Modernised Oslo Messaging Usage ➡ designate-worker and -producer are now default. (and gone in U)
OpenStack Train ➡ OpenStack Project Wide Goals • IPv6 - should be good • PDF docs ➡ WSGI App for designate-api ➡ Shared Zones
OpenStack Train - Shared Zones Delayed by a cycle due to lack of resources https://etherpad.openstack.org/p/BER-Designate-Shared-Zones Allow other projects in the cloud to modify DNS Zones in your project. Initially, 3 levels: ➡ READ ➡ WRITE ➡ SUBZONE • Allow projects to create subzones of the your zone, without modifying the zone itself
OpenStack Unicorn and Beyond Split horizon DNS Your Idea here …. We need developers to actually deliver these features
Cross-Project Work Improve the Designate <-> Neutron integration Add support for provider networks Multiple DNS Zones per network
