Strategy 1: Human and School Capacity: Recruit, sustain and empower a larger network of qualified chaperones / broaden the base of participating schools, Recruit: One-on-one school info sessions , International PDs (3 this year) Nearly half of our chaperones were first time trip leaders this year! Sustain: Offer new training and leadership opportunities for senior trip leaders -Offered workshops in itinerary development and fundraising, Piloted a chaperone training led by BPS Teachers and Administrators, provided opportunities for experienced trip leaders to collaborate with new trip leaders ● Empower: Provide on-going and in depth one on one support to all trip leaders and their team. Work with strategic partners to * Innovation, Equity provide chaperones with the resources that meet the needs of their program.
Strategy 2: Systems and Structures: Increase the amount of cross-district and cross departmental collaboration When we collaborate across departments and schools we make global education and its impact on the BPS student experience more tangible, while making travel opportunities more accessible. Examples: We arranged for trip Collaboration amongst different school We offered offered student and adult trips that were sponsored by multiple departments DGE & the History department collaborated on a cross departmental report which sought to identify GE practices across the district, and create more outlets for peer-to-peer sharing . We will facilitate our first “Be Bold. Be Global” Youth Conference on Global Education on 6/9
BPS STUDENTS CREATING THEIR OWN PRIMARY RESOURCES- FOR OUR STUDENTS, BY OUR STUDENTS!
Strategy 3: Confidence and Trust: Strengthen risk management strategies for international/ domestic (overnight) programs Safety is the highest priority in our experiential programs. We created policies and procedures to reduce and manage risk. ● DGE instituted a new travel ratio and Zika Policy ● Piloted a draft homestay policy (will be finalized in Fall 2017) ● Acquired a new travel insurance company to better meet the needs of our district ● Offered 2 Mandatory district chaperone trainings (40 trained BPS teachers & Admin) ● Delivered 4 Required Health & Wellness Briefings based on US Center for Disease Control. in partnership with BPS Medical Director and Boston’s * Innovation, Equity, Coherance Public Health Commission.
Strategy 4: Partnership for Equity: Ensure that there is equity and access to international programs across the district. The BPS Global Education Department serves as a consistent contact and active collaborator with key strategic partners. In order to ensure access there has to be a point of contact, and liaison between BPS and outside partners. This is the biggest equity asset of DGE. It can be “easier” for partners to work in other districts that might have a more longstanding infrastructure such as homestays, however DGE works closely with schools to build those structures in real time. * Equity, Innovation, coherence
Equity Statement: Increase the number of students of color and males who participate in international travel programs and Global Education programming.
