Dear fellow members, As Fleet Captain, my vision is to see all Indian Harbor Yacht Club members enjoying the on-water activities at IHYC by land and sea. There are many activities that you can participate in whether you are a sailor, racer, motor


  1. Dear fellow members, As Fleet Captain, my vision is to see all Indian Harbor Yacht Club members enjoying the on-water activities at IHYC by land and sea. There are many activities that you can participate in whether you are a sailor, racer, motor boater, paddler, or not. I encourage you to know what’s available, join in, and make Indian Harbor an enriching place and strong community. This "Get on the Water" booklet provides you with an overview of the various activities the Sailing Committee has planned for the season. I wish to thank the Sailing Committee squadron leaders and committee chairs for creating and leading many fun and exciting on-water experiences. See the boats on the docks during The Father's Day Boat Show on June 17, and The Annual Classic Yacht Regatta on Sept 14 – 15 Members are cordially invited to the festivities surrounding regattas. There are often after-racing gatherings, dinners or award ceremonies at the Seawall or on the East property which you are welcome to attend. Wednesday Night following Twilight Series Captain Harbor Friday Night, June 15 IHYC Member Alphabet Regatta, June 30 Women's InterClub Supper Series Finals, July 10 Lorna Whittelsey Women's Regatta Weekend, Sept 8 & 9 Annual Classic Yacht Regatta, Sept 14 – 15 Spectating on the water is also available for many events.

Heading into its 25 th year, Focus on Sailing (FOS), the adult sailing program offered in the club-owned Ideal 18 fleet, has proven to be an effective way to teach basic sailing skills and lead to success on the race course. The program builds confidence and competency. The FOS program offers: staff-led clinics and activities, racing and regattas, FOS Chair coordinated activities, and overall usage of the Ideal 18s. It is a great way to spend time with other members and spend more time on the water. All Members, Come and Sail an Ideal 18 Full Use fees cover the FOS program. Casual Use fees cover FOS Chair coordinated activities. Both user fees cover using the boats when available. Private Lessons are priced separately and available to all members.

  6. Calling all team players! Come participate in this variation of the sport - usually sailed 3 boats against 3 boats. Where fleet racing is a drag race, team racing is more like roller derby. It is fast paced, depends on excellent boat handling skills and rapid tactical decisions for success, but most of all is great fun. All are welcome to practice, as we build the team to compete at various levels. We are looking to compete in the NYYC Hinman Masters in August and defend our master’s title and claim overall victory at the Glencairn Team Racing Championship in October. Practices will be on Thursday evenings starting in May. Summer Solstice racing against local Clubs is on Tuesday evenings in May - June. For Ideal 18 certified skippers and all wishing to crew. PHRF Racing in Captain Harbor: • Wednesday Night Twilight Series, May 16 - Sept 12 • Captain Harbor Friday Night Series: RYC, June 1 IHYC, June 15 BHC, July 6 OGYC, July 20 … and beyond: • Start with the Geartester, May 19, and cap the season off with the Gearbuster, Oct 6 --- Both regattas have spinnaker, non-spinnaker, and double-handed divisions. ** Contact Joel Labuzetta for crewing opportunities for Big Boat Racing.** After Racing BBQs at the Sunfish Bar and Seawall are NOT to be Missed! "Introduction to Big Boats" event, June 2 --- Get familiar with the PHRF boats and crew roles to join in the racing. Squadron Leader: Rick Sinclair

  8. For a front row seat to see some great racing, join the RC. The RC team is led by the Principle Race Officer (PRO) who sets up the race course and orchestrates racing from aboard the signal boat, Sachem. We need people year round to: time, record, score, raise flags to signal boat- class starts, drive mark boats, and set marks. • Orientation Sessions: April 14 and May 12 --- Training will be held dockside aboard Sachem. • Here’s your opportunity to meet fellow sail racing enthusiasts and share in the excitement of managing our numerous regattas, from juniors racing FEVAs, all the way up to big boat distance racing. • All members are welcome to join this time honored committee.   9. For motor boat owners, there will be 4 organized day or overnight excursions with an interesting variety of planned activities.   10. Annual Summer Cruise, August 18 – 25 Chair: Ward Davol 2018 will explore destinations in Long Island Sound: Milford, Shelter Island, Essex…with racing from point to point for those who wish. All members are welcome to participate by sail, power or join us on shore by car. Annual Mini Cruise Labor Day Weekend, Sept 1 – 2 Chair: Jonathan Nye A family friendly raft-up, overnight at anchor, race to and from. A long standing tradition!

  11. Racing is on Tuesdays starting in June, with skippers and friends meeting for lunch at 1200, and sailing from 1400 to 1600. The season ends with a sail to and picnic on Great Captain’s Island!   12. Club-owned equipment available for your use: 2 --- 2-person Kayaks 2 --- Single-person Kayaks 4 --- Stand-up Paddleboard Make a reservation with the Front Desk 1. Sign out at the Front Desk and grab your paddle(s). There is a nominal fee. 2. Go to the East Property, put on your life jacket and easily launch your watercraft. Have fun!
