New York State Erie Canal • Built from 1817 ‐ 1825, 8 years • From Albany, NY to Lake Erie, 363 miles • Initially, referred to as "Clinton's Big Ditch" or “Clinton’s Folly” • It is considered the engineering marvel of the 19th Century • Spurred American settlers westward • Transport per ton by road was $100 • Transport per ton by the canal was $10 • In 1829, 3,640 bushels of wheat transported • By 1837 it had increased to 500,000 bushels 8
Transfer, PA JW and Elizabeth and • family moved to Transfer, Mercer Co, PA near Greenville, PA (1853) JW could put his • experience building locks to good use on this portion of the Erie Canal, called the Erie Extension Canal. 136 miles long • Started in 1831 • Completed by 1844 • Located in northwestern • Pennsylvania connecting Lake Erie with the Ohio River. The Beaver and Erie Canal • was heavily used in its early years.
