Our Commitment ■ Provide the highest quality educational experience for our students ■ Support and challenge all our students to achieve their full potential ■ Offer a wide range of curricular options – from National Progression Awards to Advanced Highers ■ Work in partnership to provide innovative and meaningful courses and programmes
The Senior Phase S4 – S6 ■ The Senior Phase offers our students the opportunity to extend and deepen their learning as they begin to build their portfolio of qualifications. ■ These qualifications will be a combination of academic and vocational qualifications as well as a range of awards which recognise wider achievements. These may include the SQA Employability Award; SQA Leadership Award; Saltire Award for volunteering; and/or the Duke of Edinburgh Award. ■ The Senior Phase is also filled with opportunities for young people to extend their learning through experiences like the MVP programme and Cool, Calm and Connected.
Reasons for returning ■ Higher Education ■ Further Education ■ Christmas Leavers – applies to S4 and S5 only - (d.o.b. 1 October – 28 February) ■ Not ready to leave school ■ Parental advice
Progression Routes ■ Students who are expecting a pass at National 3 should progress to National 4 or those expecting a pass at National 4 could progress to a range of related courses at National 4 or 5. ■ National 5 should lead to Higher ■ Higher can lead to Advanced Higher ■ Students moving into S5 are strongly encouraged to carry on with their 5 strongest subjects.
Progression Routes ■ Study at Higher is challenging and we will be encouraging students – where possible – to continue their studies in the subjects they have performed well in at National 5. ■ Standard academic entry requirements for University courses are commonly based on Higher awards (most requiring 4 to 5 Highers in one sitting in S5), therefore it is important that aspiring University applicants leave CCHS with a portfolio of qualifications that include as many Higher passes as possible. ■ Therefore, where appropriate, will be encouraging young people to take five Highers in S5 and then pick up any additional Nat 5s they may need in S6. A break and coming back to a subject can really focus a student in their approach to their studies.
Pathways in the Senior Phase ■ All S4 and S5 students will have a choice of 2 pathways to take them through the remainder of their school career. Students may move from one Pathway to another at transition points (S4-S5; S5-S6).
Pathway 1 ■ The majority of pupils in S4 and S5 completed or are completing pathway 1 in S4. This is the traditional route for S4 pupils. Pathway 2 is the most common route for S5/6. ■ Students may choose to follow between 6 and 8 National Qualifications at Nat 3, 4 or 5 and will be timetabled 3 periods a week for each NQ. ■ Those choosing to follow 6 or 7 NQs will choose JET, Prince’s Trust Achieve Programme or Private Study and will be timetabled for each 3 periods a week. ■ Please not ote: : to ensure re success ss in Nationa nal 5 courses s in this s model, , students ents should d continue inue with h a subject ect whic ich h they have studie ied d up to CfE CfE Level 4. ■ All student nts s must study y English sh and Maths s in this is pathw hway. .
Pathway 2 ■ The vast majority of S5 and S6 students follow Pathway 2. ■ Students may choose to follow National Qualifications at Nat 4, Nat 5, Higher or Advanced Higher and will be timetabled 5 periods a week for each NQ. The following conditions apply in this pathway: – S4 students following this Pathway must study English and Maths. – S5 Students must choose 5 courses. – S6 Students should choose 4 Highers or 3 Advanced Highers. Anyone studying less than this will be required to take 5 courses.
Which level? ■ The key message here is that students should ensure that they maximise their attainment ■ Students should continue with their strongest subjects to achieve this. ■ 6 National 5s and 2 National 4s should generally lead to 5 Highers, NOT National 5s Our evidence is that performance in S6 is better than in S5 for National 5s ■ Take advice and make an informed choice using: • Entry requirements • Reports Pupil Support Leaders • • Subject teachers
Choosing Courses ■ For Pathway 2, we have constructed a course choice sheet which will allow students to maximise their portfolio of qualifications. ■ It will allow those who already know what they are keen to do to follow a timetable which is based around their passions and skills. For example, the Arts or Languages or Science or Technologies or Business. ■ It will also allow those who are confident across the board and want to keep their options open take a spread of courses. ■ Students will be supported through this by their Pupil Support Leaders. ■ The aim is to get our young people where they want to be with the best possible results they can!
