Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Defined as “ employment which is an integral or important part of the student’s curriculum ” Today we will discuss: • Rules and Regulations • Full-time versus Part-time • Consequences on Optional Practical Training (OPT) • Acceptable types of work • Finding CPT Work • Social Security Numbers
Rules and Regulations Each college and university has differing rules on international students and CPT. NWTC allows CPT if student is signed up for an internship course • • Examples : Career Experience, Career Planning, Career Preparation, Practicum, Clinical, or Capstone classes • Student must have completed one academic year • Language training students are ineligible for practical training • Student may only work after receiving I-20 with DSO endorsement • Can be paid or unpaid work, as long as student gains direct benefits
Full-Time vs. Part-time Part-time CPT Up to 20 hours per week total • Does not impact future Optional Practical Training eligibility • Must be renewed each semester by resubmitting Employer Agreement • form paperwork and must continue enrollment in an internship course Full-time CPT More than 20 hours per week • Students may use full-time CPT for more than 12 months. • However, after an total of 12 months full-time CPT, a student will no • longer be eligible for Optional Practical Training at any future level of study. Must be renewed each semester by resubmitting Employer Agreement • form and must continue enrollment in an internship course Students may alternate between full-time and part-time
Acceptable Types of Work CPT employment must be related to the student’s program of study. Example: Public Safety Student… does the work below qualify for CPT?: • Starbucks– Coffee Barista • Green Bay Police Department – Community Ride Along Program • Crisis Center of Green Bay – Crisis Call-in Center Volunteer • Walmart – Loss Prevention Associate • Anduzzi’s Bar – Bouncer • ShopKo – Cashier • Your ideas????
Finding CPT Work Steps: 1. Visit the Career Services Office to get advice, apply for jobs and create a US resume 2. Enroll in an internship course 3. Confirm that your CPT requirements will not conflict with your employer’s expectations. 4. Complete CPT Form • Employer information and signature • Student information • Internship Coordinator or Dean information and signature 5. Bring your completed Employer Agreement Form and job description to International Programs 6. Do not begin your position until you have received your I-20 with approval. 7. Remember to renew your CPT at the end of each semester.
Social Security Card Application After getting a job offer: Bring your job offer to International Programs. We will write you a letter supporting your application for a Social Security Number Take your letter and job description to the • Social Security Office (1561 Dousman St.) Fill out application Form • Bring Passport/ID • It may take a couple weeks to get your social security card in the mail.
