Product Development: The Library ² CSI Miami Forensic Library is part of Miami-Dade Police Department ² Library assists investigators and detectives in solving crimes by processing and storing evidence ² Library also helps investigators access this information and conduct outside research ² Staff includes: -- Librarians -- Data Management Specialists -- Interns

Product Development: Digitization Project ² Divided collection: 1) digital born 2) computerized or digitized 3) older records still in paper format ² Issues leading to digitization project: -- Physical records difficult to search & access -- Use valuable storage space for other evidence ² SIC DAT will be the new forenSIC DATabase ² Two phases for digitizing paper records: 1) cold cases will have first priority 2) remaining archived case information ² SIC DAT will make CSI and evidence analysis more efficient and streamlined

Product Development: Crime Statistics ² In 2009, Miami was named the seventh most dangerous city in United States ² In 2011-12 the violent crime rate in Miami was 11.95 (3.9 national average) ² Between 1980 and 2008 there were 8,793 homicides in Miami- Dade County (highest in Florida) and only 44% (3,951) of these cases have been solved as of 2011 ² Miami Police Department is one of 30 law enforcement agencies working on these cases

Product Development: Target Audience ² Target Audience – CSI: Miami investigators and detectives ² Surveys will be conducted to gauge the investigators’ comfort level with using technology and databases in general ² Training will be offered/required ² Three goals regarding project: -- Integrates old case info with current digital records -- Introduce newer digital platforms to help investigators -- Solve old and new cases to better protect the Miami community ² May be internal resistance to changing from current physical filing system to new digital database
