  10.  Liberal vs. Conservative  Traditional vs. Cutting Edge  Never Forget Mark Twain about Kentucky  Our experiences much the same as CO’s in terms of publications, etc.

  11.  PNP, 501(c)3  Originally founded by Central KY Principals in 1917  Designated by State in 1978 (retirement)  Placed under KRS Chapter 13B for appeals in mid 1990s  Changes in rules require LOTS of hoops to be jumped through ◦ Board-Schools-Board-KBE(2)-LRC(2)-Legis

  12. O. J. Simpson becomes the first Heisman Trophy  winner elected to the Football Hall of Fame. After 6 and 1/2 years, the television series The  Dukes of Hazard goes off the air. Mikhail Gorbachev becomes Soviet leader.  New Coke, a marketing disaster is introduced.  Three months later Coke reintroduces its original formula as CocaCola Classic. Microsoft Corporation releases the first version of  Windows, Windows 1.0. Route 66 ceases to be an official highway.  Pete Rose gets his 4,192nd career base hit,  breaking Ty Cobb's record which stood for over 60 years.

  13. The Titanic is rediscovered  The Super Mario Bros. video game is released by  Nintendo. Calvin and Hobbes, a comic strip by Bill  Watterson, was first published. Ford Taurus is First Produced  Michael Jordan Wins Rookie of the Year 

  14.  TURN LOOSE OF IT.  IT’S GONE! IT ISN”T COMING BACK (NOR IS 1975, 1965, 1955), etc.  We absolutely have to stop utilizing the vast majority of our resources fighting to preserve the rules and regulations and actions of the past.  We must honor it and celebrate, but we are not required to be left behind trying to hold onto it.

  15. Any change, even a change for the better, is  always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts. Change is the only constant. Hanging on is  the only sin. He who rejects change is the architect of  decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery. If you want to change the culture, you will  have to start by changing the organization.

  16.  Be the “agent” of change, not the victim. Be seen as someone/some group willing to try someone new  YES, you can be proactive. You must see into the future by paying as much attention to the kid’s desires as you do the near-retirement folks desires ◦ Examples- Concussion legislation, Media and TV/Sponsorships, Title IX Proactivity, Activities

  17.  New Program Expansion. Our vision statement should be simple, “Every Child, Participating”  Be open minded and review options. THE KIDS WANT IT  Be the leader from the office. Position yourself with your Board, your schools to the point that they view change as positive  Some will say “we can’t afford it”. I respond frankly, we can’t afford not to do it.

  18.  You will fail with some things you try, but as Lincoln said, “My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure. ”  Holding too firmly to the past, I believe, we sincerely risk losing the influential position that athletics and fine arts activities play in the development of young people. We must continue the fight.
