  1. Creating a Multimedia Presentation Using PowerPoint Slides to Enhance Your Profile of an Influential Person Project Summary: When a California company called Forethought, Inc. developed the PowerPoint software program in 1984, they changed forever the way presentations are made. Today business people, lawyers, trainers, teachers, and students all routinely use PowerPoint slides to add visuals (brief passages of text, pictures, and even moving images) or sound to make their presentations multimedia. I am going to ask each of you to make a multimedia presentation to the class in which you profile a prominent person. The subject of your presentation will be a person who has influenced or inspired others! This person should be one who has made significant contributions to our area of study or to society in general. Each of you will focus on a different person so that in the coming weeks and months we will get information about a variety of inspiring people. (We will have a few presentations a week.) After doing your research, you will prepare a written profile of this person, providing information about his or her background and accomplishments. Then you will prepare PowerPoint slides to accompany your presentation to the class. Writer’s Purpose: Your goal in this project is to be informative. You want to present the information in an interesting and engaging way. Writer’s Role: You will write and present as yourself, a thoughtful writer with the technical skills to make an effective multimedia presentation. Audience: Your audience for this project is your classmates and me. Prepare your presentation as though few, if any, of us have much knowledge about your subject. Form: Your presentation to the class has two interrelated parts. First, you will write your profile (approximately 250 – 350 words), and then you will prepare PowerPoint slides to accompany your presentation. Focus Correction Areas: For the profile: 1. Strong introduction and conclusion (use a “hook” to grab attention; wrap up your profile smoothly) _______ points 2. _______ Facts elaborated and in chronological order (use ideas from different parts of your research: family life; education; influences; accomplishments; and impact on others) _______ points 3. To be determined _______ points For the PowerPoint slides: 1. Six to ten slides _______ points 2. One or more picture slides _______ points 3. Use PowerPoint Presentation Guidelines _______ points Procedures: To prepare for your presentation, you will complete several activities: I will provide a list of people you might choose to profile. We will discuss these people briefly and talk about others that might be added to the list. Page 88 Twelve Assignments Every Middle School Student Should Write www.collinsed.com
