Creating a Dynamic RCR Program NPA Annual Meeting Berkeley April 1, 2007 Kenneth W. Goodman, Ph.D. University of Miami Ethics Programs kgoodman@miami.edu
Context Postdocs are or think they are: Powerless Exploited Under-appreciated
So, RCR Sometimes: Seems disconnected from daily life and problems Seems to ignore career concerns Seems forced, hectoring, boring – a distraction
Competing Emphases Funding Science Institutional politics
Toward Dynamic RCR Emphasize critical thinking (no preaching!) … path to RCR “fitness” requires at least a little effort
Toward Dynamic RCR Avoid compliance as a motivator or focus … ethics is not about compliance or avoiding regulators
Toward Dynamic RCR Seek interesting partners (e.g., some philosophers and epistemologists would love to be included in an RCR program); publication and growth of science
Toward Dynamic RCR • Organize programs, not lectures; i.e., foster discussion and debate … RCR sessions are not ruses or tricks to foster good behavior
