  3. Girl Talk Audience Each PAL location which hosts the Girl Talk program recruits 15 girls. Every girl must complete an application and interview process in order to be accepted into the program. The program is geared to serve girls 11 to 17 years of age. Many of the girls who have participated in the program in the past have primarily been from the middle school population, ranging from 11 to 13 years of age. Our staff comprised of youth development professionals, sometimes recruits girls who exhibit a need for the Girl Talk program in an effort to build their self-esteem and combat negative outside peer influences. While PAL provides youth programming citywide, Girl Talk is designed to provide mentoring support opportunities to communities in which support for girls is in great need. These communities are Brownsville and East New York (Brooklyn), Far Rockaway (Queens), Port Richmond (Staten Island), and Fordham-Tremont (Bronx).

  5. The Talk • The opening of the session should highlight: Who you are? Where you’re from? And, what you do for a living? • The talk transitions to the Woman Of Inspiration then, asking the girls a little about themselves (e.g. future goals, school). Past Women of Inspiration have presented through informal speaking or powerpoint presentation. The medium used is totally up to YOU but, should generally not go over 30 minutes – take into consideration that the girls have been in school all day. Anyone of the following topics areas can be used to support your presentation: G OAL S ETTING SELF-ESTEEM AND BODY IMAGE RELATIONSHIP BUILDING VOLUNTEERISM & CIVIC ENGAGEMENT EDUCATION LEADERSHIP HEALTH & WELLNESS CAREER EXPLORATION strength of character and good judgment self-advocacy

  6. Just Us Girls The second half of the Girl Talk session we use as an opportunity for skill building. A Woman of Inspiration can lead the girls through activity related to her current occupation or, a hobby. Past Women of Inspiration have led the girls through yoga, developing a business plan, improv theater and cooking. The more unique the skill - the better! Our girls should have a cornucopia of options to aide them in making positive choices for the future. ** Should a Woman of Inspiration need specific supplies (i.e. poster board, glue, markers, A/V set up, snacks) then, the Volunteer Service Department must know two weeks prior to the date of your scheduled Girl Talk session. ** WE LOOK FORWARD TO CHATTING WITH YOU!
