Course 14 Seminar Presentation
Dona Leonardi DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 1 – Botanical Illustration This Diploma piece shows a great deal of all-round botanical control, crispness and excellent composition, combining two mediums. The composition layout makes good use of all quarters of the page and botanically the work tells the viewer a lot of information about the plant. Medium – watercolour and graphite
Charlotta Due DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 1 – Botanical Illustration The botanical study of this English Oak shows many features of the specimen to aid a botanist in identification. The attention to detail is exquisite and magnifications have been included to help show smaller diagnostic features of this species. Medium – watercolour and graphite.
Anne-Marie Jewell DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 1 – Botanical Illustration Botanical illustration is a means of recording a plant structure and its identifying features. A life-cycle is a wonderful way to portray all aspects and this rose has been laid out extremely well across the space allowed. A wonderful composition. Medium – watercolour and graphite
Agita Keiri DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 1 – Botanical Illustration Plants are to be painted life-size wherever possible for assignments and Diploma work. Being able to show the root system as well has proved a good way to show the entire plant and balance the page. Medium – watercolour and graphite dissections
Joyce Ko DipSBA Diploma Part 1 – Botanical Illustration This Capsicum fills the page well. On closer viewing, Joyce has worked very hard to capture the inner textures and depth of the seed cavities on the dissections. The shines on to the exterior skins and the overall layout has been tackled well. This is also a good example of how a common, readily available subject can used to produce work at Diploma level. Medium – watercolour and graphite
Katharine Walshe DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 2 – Mixed Study A clean, elegant arrangement of flowers with a simplistic approach works very well. Study the way the composition has been laid out to use big impact flowers with delicate grasses and minimal foliage to create beauty on the page. The attention to detail on the Chrysanthemum petal outline is worth noticing because without a clean linear presence each petal could get very muddled and lost. This is a challenging subject but well worth the effort. Medium – watercolour
Maria Moldavsky DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 2 – Mixed Study The composition of this mixed study shows a very more different approach to the traditional ‘flower arrangement’ portrait format. Laying the plants in their growth heights is an important part of building a good composition and paying attention to specimen sizes for foreground and receding perspective is very challenging but delightfully done on this piece of artwork. Medium – watercolour
Ros Purkis DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 2 – Mixed Study The mixed study Diploma work and the assignment piece really takes students out of their comfort zones. The brief was always intended to do so, to test students’ layout and design ability, much like the ‘working from photographs’ assignment. Choosing subjects that complement each other is very important. Seasonal specimens usually work well together but subtle colour matches also help. The complementary colours of the pink and yellow flowers, used with the pale yellow catkins as a ‘filler’, pull this composition together nicely. Medium – coloured pencil
Agita Keiri DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 3 – Fruit or Vegetables This Diploma piece shows exceptional skill in painting colour, tonal values and detail. A Turk’s Head Gourd has a very rigid structure and it can be hard to fit one comfortably into a composition. This is a very suitable way to arrange the specimen rather than a table arrangement in a landscape format. The detail and the tonal values of each and every seed cavity show that no time has been spared producing this masterpiece. Medium – watercolour
Tara Stewart DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 3 – Fruit or Vegetables Diploma part 3 can be completed in graphite and Tara has produced a very accomplished graphite study of Chicory, breaking the subject down into individual parts to create the composition. The tone has been rendered well to achieve the textures required on the leaves. Medium – graphite
Katharine Walshe DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 3 – Fruit or Vegetables A home-grown Kohlrabi makes a great subject choice and it is always rather fun and rewarding to paint a specimen that has been personally cared for, picked and painted. To leave the foliage adds interest because many retailers cut the tops off. Katharine has brought great movement with artistic licence in positioning these leaves. Fantastic colours have been used on the Kohlrabi and the leaves have subtle shifts in colour through their stages. Find a good organic shop, market stand or grow your own subjects and the result will be more Diploma pieces as accomplished as this! Medium – watercolour
Pam Jarvie DipSBA Diploma Part 3 – Fruit or Vegetables Common vegetables come in a variety of colours and to be able to find variations can make for a colourful painting. It is inspirational to see these and it is worth considering what will be available when planning your Diploma work. The surface texture of each carrot has been captured perfectly and leaving the foliage on holds the composition together well. Medium – watercolour
Award of Excellence • The following 3 Diploma pieces have been painted by Sunanda Widel, a Course 13 student from Singapore. • Sunanda gained the Award of Excellence, achieving 98.35% • Sunanda also gained the Diploma Portfolio Achievement (highest marks for parts 1, 2 and 3)
Sunanda Widel DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 1 – Botanical Illustration Epiphyte Orchid hybrid Cycnodes ‘Wine Delight’ The Diploma portfolio is the students’ opportunity to showcase what has been learned over the duration of the course. Whatever the course level, it is always worth considering the content of each Diploma part to ensure that they stand out from assignment work. Ultimately, students should pick subjects that inspire them so that they enjoy the pleasure of painting them from the skills gained. Medium – watercolour and graphite
Sunanda Widel DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 2 – Mixed Study Kock’s Bauhinia, Chinese Fringe Flower, Zebra Plant Bauhinia kockiana, Loropetalumm chinense, Sancheziaa speciosa This piece of work shows a more traditional approach to produce a mixed study. A lot of care and thought has been put into the stem arrangement making sure that there is no unsightly crossing over of stems, which can be a common pitfall in a mixed study. The foliage has been used well to fill spaces but not detract from the colourful flowers. Medium – watercolour
Sunanda Widel DipSBA(Dist) Diploma Part 3 – Fruit or Vegetables Elephant Ear Fig tree Ficus roxburghii The use of light and dark across this piece of artwork really accentuates the three-dimensional quality of the specimen. The natural growth habit of the plant lends itself to the format Sunanda has chosen to work in. Medium – watercolour
