  2. BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Context • The current MOU for BPE operation of the Dearborn STEM Academy expires on June 30, 2018 • BPE has been contracted by BPS as an operator for the Dearborn, a level 4 school, since the start of the 2015-2016 school year 2

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Features of the Revised MOU This MOU includes continued operation of the Dearborn by BPE for the coming school year, with some changes • The Dearborn will be more closely monitored and supported by BPS, including school leader supervision and professional development • The MOU emphasizes a focus on BPE completing the design of a STEM plan that will include diverse and rigorous experiences, with BPS supporting BPE’s efforts 3

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Terms of MOU • The proposed MOU covers the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years • Once data is released from testing conducted this spring, BPS may determine whether to continue the agreement into next year if there are concerns about academic performance • If DESE labels the school as under consideration for level 5 designation, BPS will not continue this Agreement and will promptly begin transition planning to return Dearborn to full BPS operation • A similar review will occur to determine whether the agreement will be renewed after the two-year period 4

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Dearborn STEM Early College Academy: Timeline • 2010: Dearborn Middle School enters Level 4 status • 2012: BPE and DSNI (Dudley Street Neighborhood Initiative) launch the Dudley Street Neighborhood (Horace Mann) Charter School (grades PreK-5) as first part of neighborhood-based PreK-12 pathway • 2013: Dearborn starts to expand to high school • 2014: New Dearborn project granted $37.3M by MSBA • 2014: Dever and Holland enter Level 5 status • 2014: Superintendent McDonough asks BPE to operate Dearborn 2014: Dearborn moved to 4 th floor of Burke; Interim Headmaster named • • 2014: DESE grants BPS receivership status for Dearborn • 2015: BPE begins operating the Dearborn • 2017: First HS graduating class from Dearborn • 2018: Dearborn moves back to new building 6

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Dearborn STEM Academy: Performance Highlights • Established an “everyone goes to college” culture : All current Dearborn seniors accepted to college - awarded over $1.3 million in scholarships • Built a STEM platform for every student : Every student takes Computer Science course every year & Engineering (+ 4 years of HS math and science) • Became a school of choice : # of 9 th grade families choosing Dearborn in top 3 tripled in 2018 7

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Dearborn STEM Academy: Performance Highlights • Boosted academic performance : Exceeded DESE’s targets in first year: PPI of 88 for All Students, 75 for High Needs Students, 80 for ELL/FLEP, and 75 for Students w Disabilities. No DESE-set targets in 2 nd year because of MCAS transition; SGPs of 61 in 10 th grade ELA and Math • Kept students in school : Attrition rate declined from 24.4% (before BPE) to 13.6% (current year) • Exposed students to STEM opportunities through rich internship opportunities, summer enrichment programs, and integrated 6- 12 career exposure events 8

  9. BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Building a STEM School Our aim: Create a school which puts all graduates on pathways to earn credentials with significant labor market value . This requires: • Internal programmatic structure - to ensure that students gain the skills and competencies they need • External partners – to ensure that: • Students have exposure to and immersion in the workplaces they will one day enter • The school receives regular feedback to let us know how students are doing • The curriculum is informed and refined by current STEM trends 9

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Building a STEM School: Internal Programming • Launching three career pathways: – Computer programming – Engineering – Graphic design • Project-based learning being piloted by early adopter teachers • Hired experienced Director of Early College and Pathways to build out higher education partnerships and internships aligned with career pathways • Bringing in key support: – STEM Happens Network to create/implement interdisciplinary STEM units – Apple to pilot and spread project-based learning approach – Fab Foundation to train and integrate use of Fab Lab/Maker Space • Building out arts program : Full-time music and art teachers, partnering for theater and dance 10

BOSTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS Building a STEM School: External Partnerships • Partnering with GE, PIC, and BPS to pilot STEM internship program (for Dearborn, Burke, Excel & O’Bryant) • Highly successful BUILD student entrepreneurship program • Red Hat Boot Camp to provide STEM career exposure • EMPOW & i2 summer programs provide hands-on STEM learning • Created Dearborn STEM Industry Advisory Council • Convened “Future of School” event with Mayor’s Office and BPS External Affairs • Plan to create summer STEM experiences for neighborhood elementary students who will feed into Dearborn 11
