Getting from There to Here
The Foundation was Laid by Musicals & Movies: It’s A Wonderful Life The Dreams that You Dare to Dream really do come true! I can be Whatever I want to Be Climb Every Mountain, Ford Every Stream Don’t Bring Around A Cloud to Rain On My Parade The more I learn, The Less I know Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better All you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, and I promise you, something great will come of it!
Qualities That Served Me Well: Having a Positive Mental Attitude Always the eternal optimist Extremely Inquisitive-constantly asking questions Visionary- see what can and should be done and do it No job is too big or too small The desire to Inspire and assist others in meeting their own personal goals A genuine desire to serve others A genuine interest in other people’s stories
Those Pesky, “Not So Desireable ” Qualities: Insecurity A fear of, and an inability to cope with, confrontation Unnatural need to make everyone happy/please people Too Outspoken at times Too Nice Lack of trust in others to do the job as well as I would- inherently bad at delegating Operating with rose colored glasses
Helpful Advice & Discovered Truths : It can be advantageous to ignore certain mandates Take Risks Remove the word “Feel” from your business vocabulary Listen and ask questions before delivering your decisions Never pass up an opportunity to learn more about your business Be adaptable, accept change and use it to your advantage It never hurts to ask. What is the worst that can happen? Just because that promotion is the next logical step, it does not always mean it is the right move for you Eliminate negative people. They disrupt the work flow and decrease productivity…Plus, they are not FUN!
Humans are Inherently Bad Asks! There are Baker’s four simple steps in the process: 1. Know specifically what you want to ask for and why. 2. Ask directly for what you want 3. Give three reasons why the person you are asking would want to give you what you are asking for. Not reasons why YOU benefit, reasons why THEY will benefit. 4. Ask again in a simple and direct way and then ZIP IT! Listen to what they have to say. You are never going to get what you want in life if you don’t ASK FOR IT.
It all Starts at the Top…
Positive Reinforcement Wins Best path to progress and success is to focus on strengths Allow the natural assets to shine. In the words of the Gallup organization’s Don Clifton, “focus on strengths and manage weaknesses.” Be a facilitator; arrive at insights together rather than you telling them the best way to create and execute the plan. Be the ‘question woman ’ (or man) so that the team has more ownership in decisions. They will remember key points longer, assimilate and put into practice more quickly. Acknowledge and reward exemplary performance loud and often
Legendary Football Coach Vince Lombardi One day proclaimed , “From now on, we only replay the winning plays.” Lombardi proved performance will always be better when you re-live and visualize your highest performances rather than your failures. Expect the highest potential from yourself individually and from the team.
It starts at the Top with Passionate, Positive Motivation and Clear Communication: Next the Five Steps to Help You Instill Passion and Belief in Your team!
1. Define the station mission. Be specific in terms of the goals you have for serving the community, your listeners, your advertisers and your staff. 2. Make sure that mission is easy to write, distribute and digest. Repeat the mission often and revisit it at least once per year. 3. Set specific quarterly goals for Sales, Programming, the Business Office, even the receptionist. Make sure each Department clearly understands how their department impacts the success of the others. 4. Practice, Practice, Practice! Meetings have been given a bad rap. It is important for people to spend time face to face; to share ideas and concerns. To develop solutions as a team. 5. Set aside 30 minutes each month to review the “wins” in every department. Encourage all department heads to give public acknowledgement to staff members who assist not only their own department but their fellow teammates in other departments as well.
Your To Do List Strategy: 1. Complete the tasks that you are dreading most FIRST. Your mind will then be clear to focus on the other tasks in a more positive and energetic way. 2. Focus only on the tasks that directly impact achieving your most important goals. The tasks that will move the needle. 3. Don’t get mired down in the volume of tasks, you will never complete them all.
Dwight Eisenhower said, “What is important is seldom urgent, and what is urgent is seldom important.” He designed a long admired system for determining which tasks matter most:
