Development of Dementia Services in Shetland Before January 2010 – diagnosis of unspecific dementia by family doctors Some support from Social Care Services. Specialist assessments required a 400 mile round trip to Aberdeen
NHS Shetland Dementia Assessment Service • Nurse led with clinical support via weekly video link • Nurses assess and deliver diagnosis • Nurses prescribe medication and reviews • Nurse supports Social Care staff to manage behavioural concerns
Identified gaps in services Following diagnosis: • No support for the person and/or family • Poor community awareness of dementia • Services only for advanced stages of dementia • Lack of community based activities
