  9. Children and Young People • Tackling Inactivity in College Programmes • £5m available over two years, from Sept 2017 to Aug 2019 • To support colleges to tackle inactivity. The programme will provide workforce funding for colleges who are committed to reducing inactivity. • Impact on Government outcomes: • Decrease in the percentage of people physically inactive (KPI 2 Governments Sporting Futures) • Additional focus on mental wellbeing and/or individual development . . Why are we funding Colleges • Audie ience: nce: The college audience is large and diverse – 2.9 million students – More under-represented groups than in any other educational setting* • Need ed: There are high levels of inactivity – 300,000 physically inactive 16 to 19 year old college students – Currently you are least likely to be active if you are studying at college – 49% of FE students are regularly active, compared to 61% in schools and 54% in HE** – Levels of activity drop off when students transition from school to colleges. • Track ack Re Recor cord: Colleges have demonstrated they can deliver against outcomes – 3.5% increase in the participation rates at colleges with a CSM – Active Colleges has successfully reduced the participation gap between females, disabled and BAME groups Sources: AoC ** Source: APS 9 Creating a lifelong sporting habit

What is the behaviour change challenge? • Within inactivity there are three distinct behaviours: – Doing nothing – no activity at all in the last 28 days – Not doing enough – some moderate activity, but less than 30 minutes – Missin sing the intens ensit ity – only light intensity activity in the last 28 days • Nearly 75% of inactive FE students are doing light intensity activity only Not doing enough, 11% Doing nothing, 15% Missing the intensity, 75% Creating a lifelong sporting habit
