CLIM-AMAZON A JOINT BRAZILIAN-EUROPEAN FACILITY FOR CLIMATE AND GEODYNAMIC RESEARCH ON THE AMAZON BASIN SEDIMENTS
CONTEXT: EU FP7 INCO-LAB CALL Strengthening European research facilities in non-EU countries The EU identified 6 countries to strengthen research collaborations: US, Russia, China, Japan, India and Brazil . FP7 INCO-LAB call: 12 M € in total, 2 M € for each country, one proposal selected per country, all scientific domains included Key constraint: Projects should be based on an existing international structure between the targeted country and an EU Member State, e.g., the joint IRD-UnB LMI OCE. Key objective: To use the joint research structure as a catalyst to structure and increase the cooperation with third countries Principle: Provide resources to enhance the lab profile and open it to other EU Member States and Associated Countries scientists
INCO-LAB Funded Activities The physical participation of researchers from the Member States and/or Associated Countries in the joint research unit The enhancement of the research capacity of the joint research unit with a view of further opening it to new participating researchers The preparation and implementation of future joint activities (workshops, seminars or any other similar activities) Prepare the way for opening the institutional arrangement of the joint institute to additional MS or AC governments/ministries, research organisations
Our proposal: CLIM-AMAZON, a joint Brazilian-European facility for climate and geodynamic research on the Amazon basin sediments Includes the LMI OCE current research topics on the present state of the Amazon basin hydrology and geochemistry Adds a temporal dimension through the study of the sedimentary record to go back to the past: better understanding of the mechanisms involved in climate and geodynamic changes Aims include tracking source changes in the Amazon sediments, understanding the processes involved in dissolved and suspended load evolution of the river, study the Miocene to present record of the Amazon sedimentary fan

Work Package 2 Participation of EU researchers to the joint lab activities (Leader: F. Sondag)
Objectives Expand the research activities of LMI OCE to broaden it to EU researchers participation into the study of the Amazon basin sediment climatic and geodynamic record. Grants for PhD students and Post-doc researchers and visits for EU senior scientists. Five research topics of CLIM-AMAZON: 1) Determine Amazon basin sediments sources based on the geology database. 2) Study the water and suspended load of the Amazon and tributaries. 3) Study the drillings of the Amazon delta and fan within a chronological framework. 4) Develop a predictive model for high fan rate sedimentation based on topics 2 and 3. 5) Deduce Upper Miocene to Holocene climatic and geodynamic evolution of the Amazon basin based on the sedimentary record. This WP2 will foster future collaborative research projects between European and Brazil in the area of climate change.
Description of the WP2 Task 2.1. Support to PhD students Grants for 3 PhD students from EU partners during three years each, on subjects pertaining to one or more of the 5 research topics. Each student will be co-supervised by senior scientists at UnB and at EU research institutions. The students will spend two years at UnB, Brasilia and one year at EU institutions. Task 2.2. Post-doctoral researchers stays Grants for 3 Post-doctoral researchers from EU countries for a total duration of 45 months all together, covering the 5 research topics cited above. Each Post-doctoral researcher will spend 15 months at UnB. They will be supervised by researchers at new beneficiaries from EU/AC countries and at UnB. Task 2.3. Senior researchers short visits Invitation for Senior scientists from EU countries to UnB for short research visits of an average of three weeks (total duration of 12 months). Invitation on the basis of selection of the best proposals in response of the call for PhD and post-doc subjects.
Project structure: WP3: Enhancement of research infrastructures (Leader: E. Dantas)
Description of the WP3 Task 3.1. Laboratory and Field equipament purchase and set up. The UnB analytical facilities already cover a large range of analytical instruments. It includes : a) Two TIMS (MAT 262 abd TRITON, b) Neptune MC ICPMS LA, c) Quadropole ICP- Ms, d) XRF,e) Nobless Ar-Ar mass spectrometer, f) MEV, g) Eltron micropobe and h) ion cromatography. This infrastructure operates routinely to analyze radiogenic and stable isotopes (Fe, Cu, U, Th, Pb, Nd, Sr, C, O, H, S and Hf). Acquisition of microwave oven and an ultracentrifuge. Field Equipament Task 3.2. Recruitment of project staff members The project staff members (two technicians) will be hired to suport analytical work at UnB. Task 3.3. Matching existing capacity for CLIM-AZON project needs. The UnB is currently increasing the laboratory surface by the bulding of a new laboratory of 1500 m2.
Project structure: WP4: Workshops, conference and promotional activities (Leader: P. Dutra) Objective: communicate the activities, knowledge and scientific results Task 1. Organization the workshops and training seminars in Brazil Task 2. Organization the International Symposium in Brazil Task 3.
