CHARACTERISTICS OF COASTAL SHIPPING Geographical Characteristics: ● Thousands of scattered, small, and isolated islands (Indonesia – 17,000; The Philippines – 7,000) ● Difficult access to local & regional markets ● High transport costs Challenges to Coastal Shipping: • Connecting archipelago region • Need to link the various sub-regions (GMS, IMT-GT & BIMP-EAGA) 3
