Chapter 16 Talent, Clothing and Makeup
Talent • Talent – all people in front of the camera • Performers – non-dramatic activities • Actors – portray someone else
On Camera • Eye Contact – with the viewer (camera lens) – “Play” to the camera (Tally light) – If looking at wrong camera • look down at script / lift head while turning
Close-ups • Remain as steady as possible • keep hands away from face • slow down all movements (telescope) • When demonstrating objects – hold them as steady as possible – Better to put them on table – look at monitor (tilt away from direct light)
Microphones • treat “ lav ” gently • Never “tap” mic / • or speak closely into it • hold hand mic chest high • when interviewing – hold near you when speaking – toward guest when they are speaking • Desk mic – keep aware of your hands
Timing and Prompting • Always be aware of time (Rigid timeframe) • Judge duration of spot without looking at stopwatch or clock • IFB (interruptible Feedback) • Floor Manager Cues
Hand Cues • Standby • On-time • Countdown • Speed up • 30 seconds • Stretch • 15 seconds • Wrap-up • Cue • Cut
Teleprompter • Cue Cards (Idiot Cards) • TELEPROMPTER – Video monitor – reflective glass plate over lens – Hardware and software
Clothing • Video adds pounds • fitted rather than loose clothing • Vertical rather than Horizontal stripes – no close stripes / herringbone/checker patterns – moire ’ effect • Avoid large jewelry • (or too much)
Color • Avoid chroma-key colors (blue/green) • Pure white reflects light • Avoid Red (causes artifacts) • Avoid high contract clothing – Navy & White / Black & White – difficult to adjust camera to light & dark
Make-up • Make-up used to – enhance appearance – correct appearance – change appearance • Used to accentuate features • Reduce light reflection (no shine) • scrutiny of the close-up
Make- up (con’t) • Foundation – covers up minor blemishes – cuts down on light reflection • Pancake (powder) make-up preferred over grease base • Lipstick • Blush • Eyebrow pencil/mascara/eye shadow • MAKE-UP ARTIST (Specialist)
