$4.7M POOLED FUND REPRESENTS OVER 30 INDIVIDUAL FUNDERS • This was a pooled fund with a customized funder approach. • Lessons learned are relevant whether funding individually or in pooled or aligned funds. • It took us a year - Hopefully with shared learning and resources, work is accelerated in other regions. • With pooled funds, secure a nonprofit partner to design / implement the campaign so potential funder conversations can include discussion of the plan and identify the grantee.
LEAD WITH EDUCATION • Describe the census process and new challenges for 2020. • Explain that though this is a government responsibility, the nonprofit sector has long been a partner. • Use the Census Bureau report on the need for trusted partners to negate the concern of providing funding in a political environment. • Connect census data to funder grantmaking priorities. • Discuss impact of an undercount on funders/NPOs.
EXPLAIN PHILANTHROPY’S ADVOCACY WORK Census-related advocacy work has included these issues: – Ensuring sufficient funding for Census 2020 preparation and implementation through state and federal efforts & NPO campaign. – Appointing a Census Bureau director with requisite expertise. – Including only questions that have been field tested for Census 2020 questionnaire. – Dismantling disinformation campaigns.
USE DATA TO DEMONSTRATE MAGNITUDE OF FUNDING INVOLVED Basis for Resources Communities Receive Under current funding figures, Michigan would lose an average of $1,800 of federal funds per year for each person not counted - for 10 years.
CONNECT FUNDER PRIORITIES & FUNDING Those with the most to lose from Census data is used to determine distribution of federal funds that support vital programs an undercount are the hardest to and services, including: count, including communities of Supplemental color, immigrants, young children, Nutrition Head Start Assistance seniors, the homeless and others Program traditionally served by nonprofits. Special Medicaid Education Increased Demand on Free / Reduced WIC Philanthropy and Nonprofits Lunch Programs
