Trade/Vocational Schools after HS Trade schools are focused on providing hands-on training for a specific job in the shortest amount of time possible, to quickly prepare students to enter the workforce in their chosen career and to enter the workforce as a skilled trade. There's no extracurricular involvement or on-campus culture at trade schools. Students attend their classes and get their professional training. Average cost $33,000 Average length of training: 1-2 years Waubonsee certification training $3,000/year

  13. Which BHS classes will help me prepare for my future job interests? Click the Program of Study link on the home page of your Naviance OR go to the BHS website, go to the bottom of the website where it says Departments. Click Counseling & Advising. Scroll to “Resources”. Click Career Clusters. The third box says Program of Study. Click on the cluster you are interested in to see which classes in HS will prepare you for a future in that career field.

  15. Course Registration: Making the Best Choices for Your Future A Guide for Parents and Students ➢ you and your parents can sign up for classes January 10th -24th on the PowerSchool Portal. Directions will be emailed to you. Read all directions on the portal. You can make changes to your selections until the Portal closes. ➢ you will be placed automatically into a Math, Science, Social Studies, and English course. you only need to choose 3 elective credits and 2 PE classes. ➢ If you choose an AP or Honors level course, you cannot drop it once it starts. ➢

NICE TO KNOW... ● College-bound: 4 credits of Math and 3 credits of a Lab Science. ● Most colleges want 2 credits of the same World Language ● Dual Credit and Advanced Placement (AP) Courses ○ Know before you go! Once the class starts, students cannot drop these courses. ● Ask yourself… ○ Are you academically ready? ○ You may be. But are you ALSO prepared to handle the load?

CHOOSING YOUR ELECTIVES FOR JUNIOR YEAR... ● Dual Credit Classes- BHS offers ten of these. ● Have you taken a world language for 2 semesters? ● Are you looking at NCAA Division 1 or 2 schools? ● Do you know where the course descriptions are found? ● Do you know where to find the career clusters/programs of study to help you decide on what courses you can take?

LET’S WALK THROUGH IT TOGETHER S TEP 1 - take out your Junior Registration Form (revise) STEP 2 - using a pencil, circle your preference as we go through the core subjects STEP 3 - using a pencil, now circle your preferences as we go through the electives STEP 4 - using a pencil, now circle your P.E. preference as we go through the options STEP 5 - take out your phone if you have it and take a picture of the paper you just completed. Send a copy to your parents.

  19. English Options Think about your Senior Year when considering your options. Advanced Placement Literature and Composition or Advanced Placement Language and Composition or English III

Science Options All Juniors will be placed into Physics or AP Physics There is an opportunity to choose a different Science through ● the appeal form AP Physics is appropriate if future includes a STEM focus and ● highly competitive entrance Need 3 lab sciences for college, but only 2 for BHS diploma Options: stick with the science you are placed in, request a different science, or do not take a science. Talk to your current or past teachers!

  21. Math Teachers will determine your course placement. You can choose to double up, but should you? Why would you double up? Is it the right fit? Do you have the SAT scores to be allowed into the class? What are the downfalls of taking too much math early on? Dual Credit considerations...Dual credit Calc vs AP Calc.

Social Studies Two options: Hard placed in either American History or Advanced Placement US History APUSH is great if you are wanting to take College American History senior year You can also wait to take College American History by itself and do American History junior year Always, ask the question: are you keeping balance? Is it better to take Dual Credit than AP? It’s more guaranteed.

  23. HOW DO I DECIDE WHICH ELECTIVES TO TAKE? Step 1: Learn which electives BHS offers for Juniors-click on the COURSE CATALOG under the STUDENTS tab of the BHS website (cheat sheet) Step 2: Determine how many electives you will be able to take (3 elective credits and 2 terms of P.E.) Step 3: Decide level of difficulty or rigor-think BALANCE! Step 4: Look for electives related to academic focus and career interest. Step 5: Look for electives you find interesting - what skills do you wish you had?
