Content First Semester Big Ideas/Objectives: ● Big Idea 1: Engaging with Texts Critical reading of literary texts; Analyzing literature ● Big Idea 2: Constructing Texts The writing process; Writing a literary analysis ● Big Idea 3: Focusing on Language Word meanings; Precise language; Conventions of standard English ● Big Idea 4: Entering the Conversation Academic conversation
Content Second Semester Big Ideas/Objectives: ● Big Idea 1: Engaging with Texts Critical reading of nonfiction texts; Evaluating arguments; Texts in context ● Big Idea 2: Constructing Texts The writing process; Writing an argument; Writing an analysis. ● Big Idea 3: Focusing on Language Word meanings; Precise language; Conventions of standard English ● Big Idea 4: Investigating through Research on the spot research ● Big Idea 5: Entering the conversation
Syllabus: Key Points ● Make-up work policy: two days for each day missed. Pre-assigned, long-term major projects and essays are due on the due date. ● Late Work policy: Within the unit, up to 50% credit. Only homework and classwork. ● Required Materials ○ Spiral notebook dedicated to this course. ○ Pencil/Pens ○ Highlighters
Academic Expectations ● Students turn work in on time. ● Follow class procedures/rules ● Communicate needs/concerns
Homework Policy ● Outside Reading ● Minimal homework ● Most work is completed in the classroom, however, if students do not complete in class they can do so for homework.
Assessments ● Benchmark – Unit Tests and Written Assessments once a quarter by standardized Pre-AP online tests and rubric grades ● State/National ● PSAT Oct & in spring ● Formal written assessments
Grading ● Tests/ Quizzes 15% ● Written & Verbal Assessments 40% ● Classwork 30% ● Homework 5% ● Final 10% Grades will be updated weekly.
Atuendance ● Be on time ● Be there EVERYDAY ● Be Prepared ● 5 absences- parent notification ● 8 absences- warning notice ● 13 absences- loss of credit
