  4. Southern Illinois Noyce: A Community of Problem Solvers The College of Science and the College of Education and Human Services at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, in partnership with Shawnee Community College, regional school districts, and local non-profits, have initiated a comprehensive science and mathematics education program funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) that is designed to transform the way we engage elementary & middle school students in science and mathematics. http://noyce.siu.edu/

  5. SRET: SUMMER RESEARCH EXPERIENCE FOR TEACHERS The goal of the two-week summer program is to engage teachers in authentic research surrounding ecological issues in and near the Cache River Wetland system.

  6. C ACHE R IVER W ETLANDS The Cache River Wetlands are a unique and ecologically important ecosystem ✓ Shelter to over 100 species on endangered or threatened list in Illinois ✓ Comprises over 90% of high quality wetlands in state ✓ Is listed as a “Wetland of International Significance ” ✓ mp4\sret2015sp00_canoeing_Cache_methane.mp4

  14. Noyce Teachers’ Voices What did you gain from this experience? Research Skills- “I am able to come up with a research question on my own and also analyze data.” “I gained research experience that I would not have had anywhere else.” “I gained knowledge of scientific experiences. I am taking away vocabulary, strategy and skills that I previously did not posses. By actually “doing” the scientific experience, I learned more about how to implement and share it in my own classroom.” “I gained experience in research techniques and lab work..” “I gained proper sampling techniques, data collection, and statistical analysis.” “The experience of sharing research with friends and other teachers. The opportunity to gain more experience researching new ideas.”

  15. Noyce Teachers’ Voices What did you gain from this experience? Leadership Skills- “I developed leadership skills by working with other teachers.” “I learned how to lead my students to become river watchers and citizen scientists.” “I will be working with the 5th and 6th grade teachers in my building to design a life sciences research project that can be used this school year.” “I gained experience as a teacher leader. I learned ways to incorporate field research into my curriculum.” “As a math teacher, I feel more confident instigating collaborations with the science teacher.” “As a math teacher, I felt confident teaching science lessons for the science teacher.”
