Public Art Goal • Goal: Activate space by making tunnel enjoyable, interesting, pleasing, and fun. • BREEZEWAY will achieve goal through bright color, variety, repetition, and motion-activated musical sound
Project Description • Approximately 3,000 small bamboo, hand-hew wind chimes painted in shades of grey and hung from the ceiling in groups • Wind chimes length: Between 6” to 18” • Wind chimes diameter: Between 0.5” to 3.0” • Typical tunnel height (at center): 11’ - 5.5” • Wind chimes distribution • At the entrances: Small and sparse. • At the center: Larger and more dense • Motion activated fans will be installed at the center to blow at the chimes when a pedestrian walks through tunnel. • Ceiling will be painted in a gradient of blues from slightly darker at the entrances and lighter at the center
Inspiration for Concept Proposal • Stalactites: Tunnel seen as a cavernous, subterranean passageway • Wind : Pedestrian motion activate fans activate installation • Sky : Ceiling will be painted in shades of blue • Clouds : • Grouped like puffy clouds • When blown, pieces will move • Sound : Bamboo chimes will dim the sound of vehicles without bothering pedestrians
Other Considerations • Installation will last at a minimum five years • Durable, sustainable, and resilient materials • Straightforward technology • Zero impact structural footprint • Design will complement Mike McConnell’s future artwork inside the Tunnel
