Design The Bowl The Lid The Knob Embellishments
Design Elements Shape of bowl • Shelf • Face of lid • • Knob Foot • Embellishments: Beading, Texturing •
Materials: Blanks (all approximate): Bowl 9" x 3 • Lid 1 1/2" x 8” • Knob 2” x 2” x3” • Or … Green turned and sealed blank
Establish Tenon and Base Worm screw • Chuck jaws • Cole jaws • Vacuum chuck head • Use tailstock! Establish basic bottom shape No flat lines • 1/3:2/3 Ratio • • Footer = 1/3 of diameter
Flip and grasp in tenon Slide the headstock down to the end of the lathe
Establish Curve at Top Begin Hollowing • Don’t take it too far! Establish Shelf for the Lid Stepped or not • Design elements of the rim • • Beading
Undercut the Rim Do not use bowl gouge • • Use hook tool such as Hunter tool Careful here…take small cuts Remove from lathe • Do not remove it from the chuck! You’ll never get it running right again. (Ask me how I know …)
Prepare Lid Blank Round and true up • Drill 7/8” recess • Prep Underside of Lid • Reverse and Mount in 20mm Jaws • True up face
Create Lid Edge • Measure bowl shelf Transfer measurement to lid • • Step or no step? Cut Lid Edge • Test by fitting it to bowl (still on chuck)
Mount Lid to Bowl • Put the bowl back on the lathe Press the lid against the bowl • • Bring up tailstock – not too much pressure but you’ll be surprise how strong it is. Shape the Lid • Remove wood leaving support in the center • Create the “lift” from bowl’s edge to the underside of knob
Detail the Lid • Establish edge detail Decide if there will be • embellishment Create Mount Point for Knob • Tape the lid with painters tape Carefully nibble away at stem • • Remove tailstock and remove excess wood leaving a base for the knob • Detail around the knob Re- Drill 7/8” hole for knob •
Finish the Lid • Reverse the lid Grip with 20mm jaws • • Detail underside of lid Option: Finish bowl Wet sand with wipe on poly • Other finishing options •
Shape Foot of Bowl • Reverse the bowl Cole jaws • • Jam chuck Vacuum head • Apply tailstock pressure • Finish Foot of Bowl • Nibble away at tenon Detail foot • • Remove and trim off nub manually Don’t be too aggressive!
The Nautilus curve or Golden Mean or Fibonacci Spiral • Much more pleasing than a simple curve Waist of curve is approximately 1/3 to 2/3 ratio • This is the hardest part to get right!
Prepare the Knob • Create a tenon and round to outside diameter of • Cut a 7/8” tenon that will glue into the lid Create the Curve Texture the top if desired • • Nibble from both sides while working down to final shape Keep in mind the Nautilus • curve
Embellishment Paint • Golden gels and pastes • Base coat of black Tissue paper • Nitrile gloves • Wad paper •
