In June 1838, the Danish Government officially appointed Albert Heinrich Riise as the exclusive pharmacist for the island of Saint Thomas, in the Caribbean, and granted him monopoly status to produce alcohol in his pharmacy. Initially, Albert developed rum and bitters as medicine for stomach ills. However, his rum soon gained in popularity beyond its medical function, and in 1893 The A.H. Riise Company received its first International Gold Medal at the World Exhibition in Chicago.
In the aftermath of his success Riise was awarded many honorary positions on the island of St. Thomas. At one point he was Director of the National Bank of St. Thomas and was made Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog in 1860. In 1873 he became Knight of the Swedish Vasa Order and in 1878 he became state counselor- in all probability because he donated 6000 Albert Heinrich Riise (1810-1882) came from Ærøskøbing where dollars to St. Thomas municipality so they could buy three school his father, Jens Christian Riise, (1773-1812) was a seafaring buildings.” captain. He became a pharmacist and in 1832 he was employed at “ Det Kgl. Militær-og Waisenhusapotek ” - the royal military and orphanage pharmacy- in Copenhagen” By Royal Decree he obtained the privilege of operating a pharmacy in the capital of the Danish West Indies, Charlotte Amalie. He collaborated with local doctors and became a pioneer in the field of distilling rum and bitter, that at the time, was used mainly for medicinal purposes, first and foremost as a much needed and sought after cure for intestinal, gastric, and other disorders. He developed and refined strong brands such as Old St. Croix Brand, Riises Guava Rum, A.H Riise Rum, and more. .
Royal Danish Navy Rum Rum’s origins lie in the West Indies, being made from molasses, a by product of sugar refineries, and a strong connection between the Danish navy and A H Riise began after Riise began distilling his own rum in Charlotte Amalie, St Thomas in the early half of the nineteenth century. Not only did Riise supply the Danish navy in the West Indies with rum, but rum shipped back to Denmark was aged in old oak barrels and stored securely under navy guard in Copenhagen. Today A.H. Riise continues to celebrate its connection with the Danish navy, thanks to four remarkable rums produced today, the Royal Danish Navy Rum 40%, Navy Strength Rum 55%, Frogman Rum 58% and Frigate Jutland Rum45% (Frigatten Jylland Rum). Even today, officers undergoing training celebrate the reception of their final diploma and ‘passing out’ with a couple of tots of A.H. Riise Navy rum! All four of A.H. Riise’s ‘naval’ rums are molasses -based and are produced by slow fermentation, then kettle distilled in a traditional “pot still” to produce a pure rum with an 85% pure alcohol strength. This method results in an outstanding rum displaying an extremely dark, almost ebony colour with complex flavour-hints of coffee, aniseed, liquorice, burnt caramel, molasses, spices and cedar. When combined with the exotic and elegant taste of bitter orange and the bergamot fruit, this leaves an extended, solid, bold and sweet aftertaste on the palate.
Royal Danish Navy Frogman Rum Probably the most secretive of all Danish Defence units and formed on June 17, 1957, the Frogman Corps was originally based on the British Special Boat Service (SBS) and the American Navy SEALS. In bygone times, A. H. Riise delivered rum to the Danish navy. Today, it’s the Frogman Corps that has been deployed to hotspots around the world. The Frogman Corps is the maritime special operations force of the Danish Special Operations Command and daily training is one of the most arduous, with anything up to five hours a day spent immersed in the icy-cold waters off the Danish coast. Of an annual 500-600 new recruits who enroll in the nine-month Frogman selection course, less than a dozen, on average, complete it. A.H. Riise has created the Royal Danish Navy Frogman Edition 58%, a remarkable rum for a remarkable Corps. The Frogman Edition is, like all AH Riise’s navy rums, based on our authentic Royal Danish Navy Rum, recreated faithfully on the recipe for the original rum that was first distilled 150 years ago by A.H. Riise himself. Bottle number 210 of the FROGMAN 60 (60%) Anniversary was given to His Royal Highness, Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, who completed the Frogman course in 1995.
1888 Copenhagen Gold Medal Rum There was a distinctly international atmosphere in Copenhagen in 1888 as the city hosted the Great Nordic Exhibition of Industry, Agriculture and Art, also known as the Copenhagen World EXPO 1888 The exhibition was based on the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. The participation of leading industrial nations such as Norway, Sweden, Germany, England, France and Russia ensured the Great Nordic Exhibition’s enormous success. More than 1.4 million people visited the exhibition during its six-month duration. All the major Danish companies and a lot of smaller artisans took part in the exhibition. The famous Tuborg bottle, which is widely recognised today, was the brewery's attraction at the exhibition. A. H. Riise participated in the Great Nordic Exhibition in Copenhagen. The rum was showcased on the West Indian pavilion and the company was awarded a gold medal. It is with this honour that we celebrate this special event with the launch of the 1888 Gold Medal Edition Rum
Albert Riise further secured his business by sending his son Valdemar (1853-1914) to Denmark at the age of 9. Valdemar was later trained both as a pharmacist and in agricultural institutions in Leipzig, Dresden and Paris. In 1878 Valdemar was fully qualified to start work in the most well assorted pharmacy in West Indies. Like his father, Valdemar was greatly respected in the local community, member of the Colonial Advisisory Board, Churchwarden and Chairman of the Board of Advisors of the Danish West Indian National Bank. Prince Carl was educated at the Royal Danish Naval Academy and visited the Danish West Indies twice when he was part of the crew on board Royal Danish Navy vessels. King Haakon and Riise established a close friendship over the years and enjoyed each other’s company on several occasions when King Haakon visited the A.H. Riise Pharmacy and Riise’s private home. He became Norwegian Consul and in 1907 Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog. In 1912 he was awarded the Norwegian Order of Saint Olaf, first degree, for outstanding national and humanitarian achievements. .
X.O. Kong Haakon Royal Reserve Rum A.H. Riise X.O. Kong Haakon Royal Reserve The launch of this rare Limited Edition Rum is a celebration of the friendship between two unique men – King Haakon VII of Norway and Valdemar Riise. Prince Carl visited the Danish West Indies twice when he was part of the crew on board Royal Danish Navy vessels. The first time was in 1886 when he was only 14 years old aboard the legendary frigate, Jutland. The second time was in 1895-96 when he was a naval officer aboard the frigate, Fyen. King Haakon and Riise established a close friendship over the years and enjoyed each other’s company on several occasions when King Haakon visited the A.H. Riise Pharmacy and Riise’s private home. This rum is based on the original recipe that was King Haakon’s favorite, and is now commercially available for the first time ever.
