This is a great ad….. Come and meet the Stars! On Sunday 16 December, the City of Casey in conjunction with Melbourne Stars, will stage the Melbourne Stars Day at Casey Fields, Cranbourne from 11.30 am – 3.30 pm. The event is a free day of sporting workshops, kid’s workshops, rides, stalls and the opportunity to meet the Melbourne Stars players and get their autograph. The City of Casey is looking for volunteers to help out with a range of roles on the day. As a volunteer at this exciting event, you will be part of an energetic team which is dedicated to providing first class events for the community. Volunteers will perform a range of roles at the event which include, but are not limited to: » Event setup and pack down » Workshop Assistant » Photographer Assistant » Event Admin Assistant » Runner (answering questions from the public, checking toilets and bins, delivering water to staff and any other ad hoc event day jobs that arise) » Market research Each volunteer will receive a high visibility vest to use on the day, a drink & food during the event. What is screening? The evaluation or investigation of something as part of a methodical survey, to assess suitability for a particular role or purpose.

Case Studies (large club) • Developed policies and procedures, and supporting materials in line with the NS (including volunteer role descriptions, orientation checklists, safety instructions and checklists) • Developed a recruitment strategy and advertising material to appeal to existing fans and supporters, and to attract new community members

To summarise – top tips …. • Think about whether it is possible to make your club or event family friendly • Tap into their interests and passions in your advertising material • Make it easy for people to register and limit or streamline the “red-tape” (ie Police Checks and Working with Children Checks) • Have established procedures for registering volunteers and maintaining accurate records • Consider how you will carry out induction, training and safety briefings • Make sure everyone has a meaningful role and contributes at a level that is appropriate to their skills, interests and abilities • Make sure volunteers know how to contact their supervisor or support person • Think of ways to acknowledge their contribution – provide information about the success of the club or the event and how their input helped achieve that • Be creative in maintaining contact
I leave you with this …. • In 2010, the sport and physical recreation sector attracted the largest number of volunteers (2.3 million) • The ABS 2014 General Social Survey revealed the most common type of volunteering in Australia relates to sport and physical recreation (followed by welfare/community, religious organisations and education/training) • Sporting and recreation organisations have the highest hours of volunteer involvement at 157.5 million hours per year Conclusion: Without volunteers there would be no sport in Australia at any level – amateur, professional, large or small, metro or regional – so give yourself a pat on the back and say thanks!
