ASSESSMENT AND TARGET SETTING AT WHITBURN CHURCH OF ENGLAND ACADEMY
THE GCSE GRADING SYSTEM 9-1 1. From 2019 all GCSEs will be graded 9-1, with the majority of subjects graded 9-1 from 2018 (current exceptions at Whitburn are Business, ICT, Media and some subjects within Technology) 2. New GCSE content will be more challenging 3. Fewer 9 grades will be awarded than A* grades 4. In 2018, broadly the same number of pupils attained 1, 4 and 7 as previously attained G, C and A 5. 20 per cent of those students awarded at least a grade 7 are awarded a grade 9

Students in KS3 and KS4 are regularly assessed through ‘key assessments’ Progress will be formally reported to parents/carers six times per year: 1 full report 1 parents’/carers’ evening WHITBURN 4 data-capture points, via Go4Schools NB due to the frequency of our reporting points GRADING progress may not always be evident at every assessment point SCHEME The Academy has adopted a unified GCSE style grading scheme through Key Stage 3 and Key KS3 & KS4 Stage 4 based upon the 9 - 1 GCSE system We have added fine levels to the grades e.g. +/- to give a more detailed picture Students will ‘build’ their GCSE grade from entry in Year 7 to their final Year 11 GCSE grade. For example: KS2 End of Y7: End of Y8: End of Y9: End of Y10: Y11: GCSE Score: 2+ 3+ 4+ grade 5 1+ 100/4b
Over the next few weeks all students in Years 7–11 will receive updated targets for every subject they take: a minimum expected grade; and a target grade. Both grades are generated by taking the student’s KS2 SATs scores, and generating a predicted GCSE grade in each subject TARGET The GCSE grade is then regressed at broadly 1 GCSE grade per year to generate end of year targets SETTING We use Fischer Family Trust Aspire (FFT) to generate expected GCSE grades ‘ FFT Aspire is the UK’s leading education data analysis tool. It is used by over 13,500 schools, MATs, local authorities and academy chains’ https://fft.org.uk/ FFT 50 is used for the minimum expected grade FFT 20 is used for the target grade FFT 50 is considered average difficulty, when compared to national outcomes FFT 20 is considered high, when compared to national outcomes Pupils attaining their FFT 20 targets in their GCSEs would be in the top 20% of pupils nationally who had similar SAT results End of Y11: GCSE End of Y7: End of Y8: End of Y9: Y10: 4+ grade 5 2+ (3) 3+ (3) 1+ (3) (3) (2)
The Academy has published assessment grids on the website These allow students, parents and carers to see what is needed to move onto the next grade: WHITBURN ASSESSMENT GRIDS CLICK HERE FOR SUBJECT ASSESSMENT GRIDS
