  2. April 2, 2019 Linda Austin of Artland, who attends our meetings and brings art supplies and canvasses for sale, gave a presentation on the Golden Product ranges. Any orders are to please be emailed to Linda (linda@artland.co.za) or call 021 671 6001 Linda will also be offering workshops promoting the Golden range of art products. Linda spent a wonderful week visiting the Golden Products factory in Upstate New York, USA. This once affluent area now only has three main employers, an insurance company, a yoghurt company and the Golden Products Factory. Each staff member owns shares in the company and are enthusiastic and welcoming. Linda gave us a little information on all their main products, as time was limited, but if you are interested in finding out more detail, their website is very comprehensive. https://www.goldenpaints.com/ They even have a video library and detailed product application information. You can sign up to their newsletter to receive emailed information. In all of the acrylic paint ranges the pure pigment is identical so you can become your own chemist and mix and match the different acrylics to achieve the consistency and finish required. Each tube is hand painted to offer clear visual identification of what the end result will be like without having to open the tube. The factory even has a sun bed to test for light fastness. They also have an outdoor testing area where the paint is exposed to extreme heat and cold and rain etc. A sample of every batch made, going back many years, is kept in a storage area in the roof of the factory so that if anybody has a query, and they can supply the batch number, it can be investigated. The Heavy Body paints are smooth with a buttery consistency with excellent permancy and lightfastness. The gloss of each colour is different and if you do n’t like this effect you can unify the gloss by applying a varnish finish coat.

  3. The OPEN acrylic range has been specially formulated to dry slower and has a softer consistency than the Heavy Body range. The increased working time of these colours makes it possible to use them the same way as you would oils. Blending colours on the canvas is possible. If kept in a covered palette they can be used up to about 2 weeks. They also make plein air painting with acrylics so much easier. Linda suggests you paint an under painting with the faster drying range and do the top coats with the Open range. Once dry they are not water responsive, however, if a small amount (one drop) of Open range thinners is applied the seal is loosened and you can play with blending the paint again. This range is also ideal for mono print techniques. Applied one colour at a time onto a lino plate and once printed onto your canvas left to dry before applying another colour. They also suit the subtractive method of painting where you cover the canvas surface with a layer of paint and then use a cotton cloth or swab to rub away some of the paint to create your subject. By combining OPEN range and Heavy Body range you can change the different sections of your work’s drying time. The High Flow range is very runny and can be used in an airbrush and with a dip pen as it has a ink-like consistency. They come in a wide variety of colours including Iridescent and Fluorescent colours. The Fluid Range is thicker than high flow but thinner than Heavy Body. They have the same pigment intensity as the Heavy Body range but in a viscosity similar to heavy cream. The blend easily with all acrylic colours and can be used with gels, mediums, gessoes and grounds. Interference and Iridescent colour ranges are really beautiful. The interference offer a unique ‘flip’ when viewed from different ang les as they flip between opalescent color and its complement. Over white the colour is more subtle and the flip effect more obvious. Over darker backgrounds the colour is more obvious and the flip effect is less dramatic. Iridenscent colours used alone of with other colours, gels and mediums create metalic effects. The Iridescent Pearl mixed with other colours gives a lovely pearlescent effect. Gel Mediums offer many ways to build up texture, they come in five consistencies and are available in gloss, semi-gloss and matte finishes. Molding Pastes contain marble dusk or other fillers that create a clay-tone finish with a variety of texture and their absorbent qualities make it suitable as a ground for nearly every painting and drawing media. Fiber paste when dry has the appearance of handmade paper and Crackle Paste is a thick opaque material that cracks as it dries. The size and the extent of the cracking is dependant on the thickness of the application. Once dry it is absorbant Gesso provides and bridge between the surface you paint on and the paint. They are flexable and applied in thin layers until the desired survace texture is achieved. Coloured Grounds can be created by mixing them with paint. By sanding them down a smoother more even surface is formed.
