Anglo-Saxon beliefs They were pagans and worshipped many gods. (Ex. Woden, Tiw, Thuner, Frigg, and Eostre) When people died they were either cremated and placed in an urn or their whole body was buried with some of their possessions They were buried with some of their possessions because the Anglo-Saxons believed that they need them in the afterlife. The Anglo-Saxons believed in some of the gods as the Vikings Pagans believe that the letter "T" is a symbol for the god Tammuz. Many Native American tribes are known for their high respect for Mother Earth and so it would seem that these Native American tribes are pagan like.
Anglo-Saxon rituals The Anglo-Saxons did many rituals for marriages, drinking, and funerals. Marriage: For a man who want to marry a woman, he would bring a dowry of oxen, horses,swords and shields. If the woman accepted his gift, she will"gift" him back. People think that swords are part of the ceremony as said that the bride and groom would lay each other's hands on the sword "in token of their heroic duty". Drinking: The Anglo-Saxons had a great significance in drinking. A banquet hosted by a king, would be prepared for guests. Women carry the ceremonial vessel to the king and his guests. They only share one cup and they boast about their speeches and give gifts to the king's warriors. The king also give young men weapons so the young men can use the weapons as defense. These rituals helped maintain hierarchy and allegiance. Funerals: They believed that a life after death because they provide the dead objects they need. Men will be buried with weaponry and women with jewelry. For a person with higher status in society, the more better the burial and high quality burial goods.
Anglo-Saxon rites of passage Rites of passages are ceremonies that mark important transition periods in a person's Life such as birth, puberty, marriage, having children, and death. The main rights in Heathenry are called blots and symbels. Heathen groups and individuals Hold feasts and celebrations based around blot and symbel at rites of passage such as weddings and baby naming, holidays and rites of honor of a particular God or gods. Blots or "bloats" are ritual sacrifices of an animal to one or more gods or ancestors. A feast followed afterwards at which meat was shared among the participants. It was held to honor the gods for specific purposes such as peace and victory. Symbles or "sumbles"are drinking ceremonies in which one or more drinking vessels filled with a special drink used for toasting. The first round of toasting is for the gods, the second round is for the ancestors and many more until the symbel has stopped at a certain number.
What happened to them? Norman's defeated Anglo-Saxons at Battle of Hastings, conquered England and started Norman Rule.
