Goals for Students and Parents ● To learn about the “Future Ready Core” high school graduation requirements. ● To understand courses your student must take to meet the graduation requirements. ● To better understand the rigor of high school. ● To lessen the stress and anxiety of high school transition time.

High School Terms to Know ● ACT – American College Testing – alternate admissions assessment to the SAT. ● AP Course – Advanced Placement course earning the student high school and college credit and 2 extra “quality points” for the final grade earned. ● Blackboard-teacher communication site. ● Block Schedule – 84-90 minute class period for one semester. Students take 4 courses in fall term & 4 new courses in the spring term. All classes cover 1 year of material in 1 semester . ● CDC - Career Development Coordinator ● CFNC -College Foundation of North Carolina www.cfnc.org Free, online resources to assist with helping you plan, apply and pay for College and for submitting college apps.

High School Terms (con’t.) ● Elective course – any course not specifically required for graduation but taken as an option to fulfill the required number of credits for graduation. ● EOC Tests- End-of-Course Exams created by the state. Counts for 25% of grade. All students must pass the 3 EOC’s to meet graduation requirements- Common Core Math I, English II, and Biology. ● FRC – Future-Ready Core graduation requirements. All students are in “Future Ready” Core unless in Occupational Course of Study (IEP determined). ● GPA – Grade Point Average calculated by dividing the quality points earned by number of courses taken. ● HomeBase – Student and Parent Portal on PowerSchool. Parents and students can monitor grades, attendance and discipline.

High School Terms (con’t) ● Honors Course -advanced course earning .5 extra quality point for the final grade in the weighted GPA. ● IB Diploma Programme- International Baccalaureate – Advanced Diploma Program available at 3 magnet high schools, Broughton, Millbrook and Garner. ● NCAA Clearinghouse – National Collegiate Athletic Assoc.-student athletes must register to participate in varsity college sports (see Athletic director for more info). ● NCVPS – North Carolina Virtual Public Schools- online courses available under certain circumstances to students enrolled in NC public schools.

High School Terms (con’t.) ● NHS – National Honor Society ● Quality Points – Points earned for passing a course, honors, AP, and IB courses are allotted extra quality points for the “weighted” Grade Point Average (GPA). ● Required Course – Course that must be taken and passed in order to earn a high school diploma. ● SAT – Scholastic Aptitude Test – college/university admission assessment. SAT II - Subject tests within the SAT, required for some college admissions. ● Transcript – Official document listing courses, grades, GPA, class rank.

High School Terms (con’t.) ● UNC Admission Requirements - minimum requirements for admission to the 16 public colleges and universities within the UNC system in North Carolina — slightly more rigorous than the minimum NC graduation requirements. ● Unweighted GPA – the grade point average calculated without adjustment for academic level of the courses taken (Hon., AP, IB). ● MSL – Measurement of Student Learning. State-mandated final exams for CTE courses. ● Weighted GPA – the grade point average calculated by adjusting quality points according to the academic level of the courses taken – Honors, AP, IB.

UNC Systems Minimum Requirements Language – 6 credits total • English – 4 credits • Second Language – 2 credits ( recommended that highest level be taken in 12 th Grade ) Math – 4 credits ( Common Core Math I , II and III. • 1 credit course, beyond Math III, it is recommended this be taken in 12 th grade) Science - 3 credits (Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry) Social Studies – 4 credits (World History, American History I & II, Civics & Economics)

  17. *Students may register at Home with parents, instructions are in this presentation. *Students may register at school on any day. I will meet with every student based on their assigned high school. I will follow up with them during 4 th period Smart Lunch.

  18. How To Register for 9 th Grade? Mrs. Guinn, 8 th grade Counselor is coming in to all 1 st period classes until Thursday, April 7 th . A paper Registration Sheet will be sent home for parents to go over with them and Sign, this must be returned to their 1 st period Teacher the next day. Rewards will be given to those with the parent signature.  All students will register for 9th grade on Powerschool. Students will use their powerschool username and password. Their username is their student id number or lunch number. If the password needs to be reset, this must be done in Student Services, let your 1 st period Teacher know, they will email Mrs. Guinn, our Data Manager, Ms. West will reset it and it will be emailed to your 1 st period Teacher to give to the student.
