An Audit of Steroid Treatment within a two-week relapse period at Salford Royal Hospital Mo Hakmi Consultant Neurologist
Methods • Retrospective audit twenty patients/relatives Contacted the MS service Jan 19- March 19 reporting ‘’possible relapse’’
Aim 1-To evaluate our compliance against NICE In terms of prescribing steroids within Two weeks of relapse 2-relapse to T/C period 3-T/C to clinic period
Demographics • 17 F • 3 M • Oldest:69 • Youngest:29 • Average:39
Relapse to T/C Longest:35 days Shortest: 2 days Average: 14 days
T/C to clinic appointment • Longest: 13 days • Shortest: 1 day • Average: 5 days
Results • 12 patients had real relapses 3 did not receive steroids (better)/SE 9 received ( six within two weeks) other 30 -40 days! 8 (mimics/ pseudo) Reasons: Migraine, anxiety, functional, infection Or no diagnosis given!
Conclusion • 66% compliance with NICE (can be better) • Relapse to T/C significantly high • T/C to appointment needs to improve
Recommendations 1-Better education for patients about importance of reporting relapses This also has implications on DMT decision 2-Inclusion of advice about relapses/mimics in clinic letters ( similar to PD) 3- ?Appointing more MS nurses
