History of Ebrington 1840 - 2012 Ebrington is a 26 acre site and was a former military base dating back to 1840s • • The centrepiece of the site is the historic Star Fort • Ebrington was extended in 1875 and 1895 • The Officers’ Mess was a further extension in 1904 From 1939-45 Ebrington was occupied by the Navy, re-named HMS Ferret, the main • naval base for the Battle of the Atlantic in World War II. It was subsequently named HMS Sea Eagle in 1947 • The site was closed in 2002 • Reinvestment and draft initiative passed to OFMDFM (2003) • Ebrington draft Masterplan – mixed use development (2006) • Ebrington identified as catalyst project in the One Plan (2011) • Official launch of Peace Bridge (2011) • Ebrington Square opened in 2012 • IPI Awards award winning space in 2012
Regeneration works at Ebrington from 2003 • Survey completed of all buildings on site, approx 100 buildings (2005/06) • Extensive works to scheduled monument including rebuild and re-coping sections of the wall, all completed with 27 NIEA licences (2005 onwards) • Mapping of the buried sections of the historic wall (2005 onwards) • Works carried out in interior and exterior of listed buildings including work to weather proof buildings, minimising dry rot • Flood lighting provided for most prominent buildings viewed from cityside • Demolition of 100 unlisted buildings (2007/08) • 14 listed and 5 unlisted buildings now for development • Demolition on Parade Ground to return it to original 1870’s form ( 2007/08)
Regeneration Works cont.. • Two cannons unearthed dating from mid-1890s (2011) • Refurbishment of Building 71 – Head Quarters for City of Culture 2013 (2011) • Peace Bridge opening– 550,000 people have now crossed the bridge (2011) • Launch of Mute Meadow (2011) • Cunningham Square opened to the public to access the Peace Bridge from Clooney Terrace (2011) Extensive renovations planned for Building 11 in next three months • • A multi-storey car park will open up Ebrington from King Street roundabout • Buildings 80 & 81 will become a Creative Industries Hub and hold the Turner Prize as part of City of Culture 2013 • Vital venue for 2013
