  21. Common mistakes affecting your daughter’s performance

  22. Languages – concerns observed  Write the word clearly and legibly.  The importance of punctuation when writing composition as it will change the meaning of the sentence.  To shade the OAS clearly and erase the shading as clean as possible.  Use of annotation

  23. Mathematics – concerns observed  Carelessness eg Pupils remembered Angles at a point = 180 degrees instead of 360 degrees; Reading and Interpretation of Math terms like "increased/decreased to" "increased/decreased by"  Visualisation errors of solid figures and nets - pupils need to visualise and identify the different nets of solid figures such as cubes.

  24. Mathematics – concerns observed  Examples (a) Mathematical statement error such as wrong use of equal sign Eg. 5 x 2 = 10 + 1 (Pupils ought to separate the 2 equations. 5 x 2 = 10, 10 + 1 = 11) (b) Mathematical error involving percentage eg. 1/5 x 100 = 20% (Pupils should put a % sign after 100. 1/5 x 100% = 20%) (c) When answering questions on MONEY, pupils answer must have 2 decimal places Eg. $12.5 (Pupils must put a 0 after 5. $12.50)

  25. Science – concerns observed  Importance in ensuring skills in answering questions and application of knowledge and concepts  TICKLE approach taught to pupils

  26. T • Identify Topic • Which topic is this question from? • Important Information (highlight) I • What are the important information in this question? (eg: diagrams, headings of tables, etc) • Identify concept C • What scientific concept is this question testing me? • Keywords K • What are the keywords that I have learnt from this topic and concept? • Link Answer to Question & Concept (use L keywords) • Did I write my answer according to the question and concept? Did I use the correct keywords? • Evaluate E • Check: Did I use TICKLE to write my answer correctly?

  27. Timeline 2013  15 & 16 Aug: PSLE EL and MT Oral  20 Sep: PSLE Listening Comprehension  26 Sep: PSLE EL (Written)  27 Sep: PSLE Mathematics (Written)  30 Sep: PSLE MT (Written)  1 Oct: PSLE Science (Written)  2 Oct: PSLE HMT (Written)  21 Nov (tentative): Release of PSLE results  22 Nov – 27 Nov (tentative): S1 Option Period  Mid – Dec: S1 Posting results

  28. Follow up  Keep in close communication with school  Ensure they come for supplementary lessons  Ensure that they are doing consistent study in a conducive environment  Monitor homework & remind them to use taught strategies  Keep them stable & healthy; ensure they manage time & have enough rest  Believe in them
