AFIS Automated Fingerprint Identification System A type of biometric system that uses digital imaging to capture a fingerprint.
Who Uses AFIS? The FBI uses IAFIS, Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System, which is a combination the Bertillon and fingerprinting systems.
Who uses AFIS? Also, most courts and law enforcement agencies use AFIS to identify people by their fingerprints.
First, categorize the fingerprint as a whorl, loop, or arch. Then, look for ridge characteristics, such as ridge endings and bifurcations, How Does it Work? and mark them on the fingerprint. Last, compare the ridge characteristics to other fingerprints to determine if it is a match or not. The print is a match if the statistical correlation score for one of the prints exceeds the pre-set threshold.
What is the Henry System? A long standing method by which fingerprints are sorted by physiological characteristics. It was the bases for modern day AFIS until the 1990s. Recently, it has been replaced by ridge flow classification approaches.
How do AFIS and the Henry System relate? The Henry System was the bases for modern day AFIS, but has recently been replaced. Both systems use fingerprints.
