AP and DE: An Overview Similarities: Both are college-level courses , with rigor beyond that of a standard or advanced-level class Both provide a weighted credit , boosting a student’s GPA significantly Both can yield college credit upon course completion, at a drastically reduced cost when compared to standard tuition rates Both are viewed extremely favorably by admissions staff at competitive colleges and universities Offer tuition/fee reductions for low income students
AP and DE: An Overview Differences…AP classes: Are not tied to a particular college, but are administered through the College Board Are tuition-free Yield college credits through an end-of-course exam (generally priced around $92) Colleges and universities set individual policies on awarding credits for AP exams
AP and DE: An Overview Differences…DE classes: Are tied to Germanna Community College Are priced at around $55 per credit (roughly $330 for a full-year course awarding 6 college credits) Yield college credits automatically as long as students maintain a “C” average Public college and universities in Virginia must honor transfer credits (out-of-state and private schools are not required to do so)
