Tip #1 – Apply for Financial Aid • FAFSA – Free Application for Federal Student Aid • Apply online at https://fafsa.ed.gov • Obtain your FSA ID • Everyone qualifies for some form of financial aid • Use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to complete the tax sections for parent and student • Scholarships • College or university website • Employers, banks, other affiliations • Internet sites • Veteran benefits for dependents
Tip #2 - Special Circumstances Notify your financial aid advisor if you have one or both of the following - • Changes in income • Loss of employment
Tip #3 - Email and WebAdvisors • Check email and respond to all requests • Mark each schools’ domain as “safe” (ex: @alvincollege.edu) • Always include your full name, ID Number (not SSN) and semester for which you are inquiring • Check your school’s WebAdvisor for information and updates
Tip #4 – Ask Before Dropping Classes • Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) – must maintain completion rate and GPA • Certain types of aid require minimum enrollment • Limit on number of times students can drop/withdrawal (state and federal) • Withdrawing from classes and/or low GPA can result in paying back financial aid or being placed on probation
Tip #5 – School or Scam? • FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS • Read, follow directions, ask questions, and respond • NEVER pay to receive aid • FAFSA.ed.gov - not .com or .net • Legitimate scholarships do not charge a fee to complete an application
Financial Aid Trends • Federal loan interest rates are still low and have been capped • Pell Grant Lifetime Eligibility Limit – equivalent of 12 full-time semesters • Federal loan limits and loss of subsidy for not completing your degree
Changes to the FAFSA for 2017-18 • Students will be able to submit a 2017-18 FAFSA as early as October 1, 2016, rather than beginning on January 1, 2017. • Students and parents will report income information from an earlier tax year (2015 instead of 2016). • The 2016-2017 financial aid application year runs from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. • The 2017-2018 financial aid application year runs from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2018. • IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND COLLEGE DURING THE FOLLOW SEMESTERS: • Fall 2016, Spring 2017 and Summer 2017 • APPLY NOW! • Fall 2017, Spring 2018, and Summer 2018 Apply as early as October 1, 2016 – June 30, 2018 •
