WHAT IS SHOWER IRRIGATION? It is a new overhead irrigation concept with the following attributes:- a ) It is a water rationing machine with high water distribution uniformity. b ) It is a mobile system that is highly versatile and maneuverable in the crop field. c ) It uses less fossil fuels making it a “climate smart irrigation system” . d ) It is a closed system vis a vis open furrow system. This reduces water spillage, seepage and evaporation . e ) It is a Low pressure system vis a vis high pressure sprinklers. It uses small portable water pumps of 5 Hp f ) It is the mechanized version of Spot / Bucket crop watering method used by subsistence farmers. It irrigates large tracts of land within a short period of time. 3.

COST OF FUEL/ ENERGY FOR PUMPING WATER IN 2 Ha (5 acres) FOR 1 YEAR (360 days) Technology N:B The Shower uses 1,800 liters of petrol per year to irrigate 2 Ha (5 Acres). This is at a cost Ksh 100 per liter or Ksh 180,000 per year (360 days). Applying the KARI fuel/energy use efficiency ratio of, 1.0 : 3.7 : 3.9 for (Shower : Sprinkler : Furrow) the Furrow used 6,600 liters at a cost of Ksh 660,000, while the Sprinklers used 7,020 liters at a cost of Ksh 702,000. On average the shower saved Kes 500,000 in fuel costs. 6.

IMPACT CREATED BY SHOWER TECHNOLOGY 1. BY RE-DESIGNING AND CONVERTING ALL FURROW / SPRINKLER DRIVEN IRRIGATION SCHEMES IN THE COUNTRY TO BEING SHOWER DRIVEN , THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF WATER CURRENTLY USED WOULD BE ENOUGH TO INCREASE THE CURRENT IRRIGATED ACRERAGE OF 250,000 HA TO OVER 800,000 HA WITHOUT INCREASE IN WATER SUPPLY. THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ALSO BENEFIT FROM LOW COST OF DEVELOPING IRRIGATION INFRASTRUCTURE. FOR EXAMPLE WATER USED AT BURA IRRIGATION SCHEME IS ENOUGH TO INCREASE IRRIGATED ACREAGE BY 10,000 HA FROM THE CURRENT 5,000 HA TO 15,000 HA. USING SHOWER SYSTEM 2. FARMERS WOULD ALSO BENEFIT AND REDUCE THEIR COST OF FOOD PRODUCTION. THIS IS ESPECIALLY IN REDUCTION OF FUEL COST FOR PUMPING WATER. REDUCTION OF COSTS LOWERS FOOD PRICES TO THE CONSUMER. 3. THE SHOWER IS A CLIMATE SMART IRRIGATION SYSTEM . LESS USE OF FOSSIL FUELS FOR PUMPING WATER MEANS LESS CARBON EMMISSIONS. 19.

CONCLUSION WATER MANAGEMENT IN IRRIGATION SCHEMES Furrow driven/designed irrigation schemes should be re-designed and converted to SHOWER technology.
