  6. Setting up a Compliance Program: Best Practices Purpose: To provide important steps to help you establish your RF Safety Awareness program for your organization, which over time, will help you develop a more robust program. Step 1 – Make it a priority Step 2 - Responsibility Step 3 - Improvement

  7. Step 1 – Make it a priority Make safety and health your top priority – An employee who feels supported and safe is an engaged employee. • Be proactive • Lead by example • DO NOT rely on service providers • Establish and exercise a robust program

  8. Step 2: Responsibility A wireless service provider (WSP) has an overall responsibility to comply with regulatory bodies in maintaining a safe and secure environment. But relying solely on the service provider should not be your responsibility. • Fully understand RF and it effects. • Provide training: Set the frequency of your training (annually or biannually, project base). • Provide proper PPE to your employees. • Enforce regulatory bodies’ regulations. • ALWAYS keep emergency contacts handy.

  9. Step 3: Improvement There is ALWAYS room for improvement • Stay informed with technology. • Keep track of your portfolio and/or inventory. • Review and update your program accordingly. • Keep the public informed.

  11. 5G and the new challenge! COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  12. Summary 1- Company overview 2- Introduction to 5 G challenges 3- EMF measurement in the Telecommunication industry COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  13. About Wavecontrol: highlights +3000 23 years Delivered (since 1997) instruments +5000 +60 countries Continuous R+D ILAC accredited 5 continents calibrations ISO 17025 ISO 9001 accredited calibration lab certified company COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  14. 17025 Accredited Calibrations • LabCal Wavecontrol: ISO 17025 Accredited Calibration Laboratory for probes. • All equipment delivered with accredited calibration • ILAC calibration accepted Worldwide COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  15. 5G Challenges • Frequency range: 5G will be present in several new frequency bands: ✓ Sub-6GHz (for example 3.5GHz) ✓ mm Waves (28, 39 … GHz) • Wavecontrol has already increased its probe frequency range up to 60 GHz so it can cover all the next 5G frequency band allocation. COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  16. 5G Challenges • EMF exposure depends even more on the traffic due to beam sweeping. • No standardized methods is defined to measure the EMF exposure. Several methods are under considerations : ✓ Force the antenna under 100% traffic inside the desired beam with a user equipment (UE) ✓ Determine or extrapolate the maximum exposure with fast RMS detection. COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  17. EMF measurement in the Telecommunication industry Following : IEC 62232, ITU-T K.61, etc. COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  18. EMF measurement in the Telecommunication industry • Properties of EMF in Telecoms Industry Requirements of Measurement instrument • • Field regions (near-field and far-field) Isotropic measurement (preferred) • Broadband (easier and cheaper) or Narrowband • Minimum sensitivity = 1 V/m • Isotropy = < 2 dB, Linearity = less than ± 1/1.5 dB • Frequency response: • 900 MHz – 3 GHz = ± 1.5 dB • Below 900 MHz or Above 3 GHz = ± 3 dB • In near-field, both E and H should be measured • In far-field, only one is measured. The other can be evaluated using the formula. E/H = Z 0 = 377 Ohms (i.e. Impedance of free space) • Measured value can be in field intensity (E/H) or power density (S) units. Standards – IEC 62232 and ITU-T K.61 COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  19. Measurement Procedures and Conditions • Compile all the relevant information of the measuring site: • Sources of EMF around site and their characteristics (frequency, intensity, the type and orientation of the antenna, degree of inclination. etc) for proper positioning (see figure). • Possible perturbation or interference with measurement • Preassessment to locate sensitive areas with maximum exposure levels (Hotspots). COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  20. Measurement Procedures and Conditions Averaging: • If required, Spatial average should be done at the height of possible human presence (1.5m , vary between 0 to 2 m) • Time averaged according to standard used. • 6 mins, 30 mins or as stated otherwise. COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  21. Measurement Procedures and Conditions SMP2 – RF Human Exposure Assessment • Move the SMP2 around and look for the maximum value. • Place the SMP2 on a tripod at the correct height. • Press the LOG button. The SMP2 will start measuring for the measurement time set. • Find your measurement in MENU -> MEASUREMENT LOG . COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  22. PC Software: SMP2 Reader • Remote control and Measurement • Using F.O. connection • Display • SMP2 parameters • Real time measurements • Google map location (if GPS was ON) • Measurements visualization • Graph format • Table format • Import data from SMP2 meter • Automatic report generator COMPANY PROPRIETARY

  23. PC Software: SMP2 Reader • Automatic generated report with info: • Logo (customizable) • Used SMP2 + Probe information • Last automatic screenshot (if activated) • Measurements settings , date and time • Results • Measurements in graph and table format • Location (if GPS was activated) COMPANY PROPRIETARY
