  7. 2016 Member Survey Dual purposes - To inform and get member input on a number of important topics including: •The potential impact of the “sharing economy” and expanded private home sharing on FOBBA and FOBBA’s position on the matter •FOBBA’s marketing programs and relationship with Resorts of Ontario • New annual conference & AGM format • Monthly newsletter content and value HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  8. Key Survey Findings Private Home Sharing • The 25% of us listed on Airbnb get 12% of bookings from it. All respondents get less than 2% of bookings from Airbnb. • Approximately 50% of bookings come through booking engines (including BBCanada) and 28% from our own websites. Telephone calls have dropped to about 14%. • Almost unanimous support for the adoption of the FOBBA B&B definition province-wide. The questions around how to enforce this however reflect a variety of views. The majority support a FOBBA “Level 1” membership requirement with the minority supporting either municipal or provincial regulation. • 63% of members supported the possible need for a two tier membership structure while 75% indicated that they would remain as “enhanced” members with full member benefits including the FOBBA webpage and participation in the star rating system. HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  9. Growth of Online Listings • The number of traditional B&Bs continues to drop (e.g. BBCanada Ontario listings declined from approximately 1,900 in 2014 to 1,500 in 2016). • Larger urban centres have seen a rapid increase in Airbnb listings (in excess of 10,000 in Toronto and 15,000 in Ontario). Most of the properties listed on Airbnb are not hosted B&Bs, but rather home or condominium rentals. • There are now 128 Huntsville listings on Airbnb HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  10. Implications for B&B Industry • Increased competition as more rentals enter the market. Successful B&Bs must differentiate themselves by offering services and “experiences” not available from low cost room renters. • How to enforce compliance with public safety regulations. • Increased threat of government regulatory reaction. HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  11. Provincial Framework - Provincial registration - Municipal zoning & inspection - Safety & Fire regulations - Insurance - Taxes & marketing fees Guest Community Protection Rights Provincial Framework - Minimum operating standards enforced by industry associations - Standardized definitions (Hotels, Motels, - Ratings/inspections for commercial Inns, B&Bs, Campgrounds, Other) Guest rentals - Bans or limitations (e.g. condos) - “Other” private rentals must obtain Experience provincial registration - Welcoming community - Eliminate fraud - Economic benefits/ tourism - Knowledge & expectations - Provide choice HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  12. Sector Responsibilities Municipal Provincial - Zoning/ Permits - Registration - Enforcement - Definitions - Safety inspections - Legislation Industry - Operating standards - Operating inspections/ ratings - Member education HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  13. FOBBA Requests • Province wide adoption of FOBBA B&B definition • Mandatory membership in FOBBA or a member association and compliance with Level 1 operating standards • Other renters not permitted to use term “Bed & Breakfast” HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™

  14. Progress on Five Strategic Issues Advocate with Government, RTOs and DMOs 1. Increase membership 2. Work with ROO to deliver member benefits 3. Enhance FOBBA brand awareness 4. Member education and development 5. HOSPITALITY LIVES HERE!™
