2018 Legislative Tour
Opportunity Zone & HUB Zone Event • Ohio designated 320 low-income census tracts across the state as Opportunity Zones under the new tax law. • City of Bryan census tract 9506 received the opportunity zone designation in 2018. • This allows investors and companies to defer paying capital gains taxes on investments in exchange for committing to invest that additional money into Opportunity Zones long-term, for 10 years or more.
Williams County Housing Opportunities Assessment • Announced during the 2017 Annual Meeting, WEDCO formed the workforce & marketing subcommittees. Overview of the process • The WEDCO Workforce & Marketing subcommittee consists of approximately 10-20 participants from a variety of backgrounds including government, education, manufacturing, health, insurance, finance, and construction. • In 2018 the first initiative of the subcommittee was pursuing Williams County Housing Study .
Williams County Housing Opportunities Assessment Williams County displays all the tell-tale signs of a housing market poised for growth. • Rental housing vacancies nearly non-existent, below 1% • Renter household growth among every school district from 2010 to 2018 • Burgeoning employment base with 33 major employers of 100 or more employees • Williams County is 3.9 percentage points behind the region in terms of offering housing product built since 2000 and 4.8 percentage points ahead in housing built prior to 1940. • Available for-sale housing properties not keeping up with demand

Business of the Year Nominee • In 2018 Spangler Candy acquired the Sweethearts and Necco brands and purchased a 20-acre New Era campus. • Spangler plans to renovate the campus, providing more room for warehouse space and future expansion. • Collaborative efforts with Bryan City Schools makes it clear Spangler Candy is invested in not only the community, but in the future. • Spangler Candy has continued to add employee benefits beyond the expected and shows true commitment to the community and workforce.
